This one’s for our North American brothers and sisters. We’re aware that there are those in our community who shake their angry fists at the sky whenever we announce a DVD release and it is region coded for somewhere off our shores. Rather than scold you for not having that all important all-region DVD player we do keep a watchful eye out for domestic releases as well so one day you too can join in on the water cooler conversations about international cinema.

Immensely popular in its home Japan and on the festival circuit both Death Note films and the spinoff L: Change the World have enjoyed large success. VIZ Media announced that they will be bringing the first film to Region 1 DVD this September 16.

The DVD will include the uncut 126 minute-long film in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, the original Japanese audio track, a brand-new English language dub, and removable English subtitles. Bonus features include an interview with director Shusuke Kaneko. Additional extras TBA. The suggested retail price is $24.98.

Still want to know what all the fuss has been about? On September 16 you can find out for yourself.

Umm, didn’t Viz put this out in limited theatrical release digitally?  I figured it was a foregone conclusion that they’d release it on DVD.

“water cooler conversations about international cinema.”

Here’s how that goes at any water cooler I’ve ever seen:

“Did you see (insert foreign film here)? It’s great!”

“I never even heard of that.  Is it in English?”

    “No”

After that they humor you by pretending to care what you’re talking about when they’d really rather be talking to that hot secretary from accounting with the drinking problem.

Har dee har har… sigh, your words ring true. However, we didn’t get it up here in Canada.

A two day theatrical run is probably the most sincere definition of ‘limited theatrical release’ out there apart from running into the front door, throwing your copy of the DVD to the floor and yelling, ‘I’ve released this foreign film to run around this theatre. Now go little one. Spread your wings and enjoy your freedom!’

It’s been listed at Amazon since the beginning of June.. I take it Sci-Fi Japan is the only website that got an official press kit, hence the insanely detailed post now.

Based on a manga? Should be the manga, surely.

It’s an Asian film on American DVD - the hell with grammatical errors on the cover, we’ll be lucky if it’s in sync and has subtitles that aren’t closed captions.

Any subbing is welcomed; The “limited theatrical release” was dubbed start to finish. It was really bad.

I thought West Coast got it subbed and East Coast got it dubbed, or something moronic like that?
