I’ve commented in the past that there seems to be a boom in noir-oriented films coming out of Denmark lately and, man, this is one trend that looks good on them.  The latest in that mold is Kandidaten - The Candidate - a thriller from director Kasper Barfoed with stars Nikolaj Lie Kaas - one of my favorite actors in the world - and Kim Bodnia of Pusher fame.

Jonas Bechmann, a defence attorney, is a man of the system. Until the day he himself is accused of murder. Taking matters into his own hands, he throws himself into the hunt for a group of blackmailers who threaten to expose him as the killer. But nothing is what it appears to be, and the blackmail links back to his father’s death under mysterious circumstances a year and a half earlier.

The first teaser for this has just released and it is potent stuff, strikingly well shot and carrying through an edgy sense of paranoia.  You’ll find it in th Twitch Player below the break.

I’m very much in love with Euro thrillers at the moment, with the likes of Le Serpent, Bitter Flowers and Tell No One treating their audiences like intelligent adults. This looks very much in that vein. Very impressive.

This looks like a very good film.  I am a great fan of Nikolaj Lie Kaas as well.  DFI has posted a new feature page for Ved verdens ende / At World’s End, another upcoming movie with Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Nicolas Bro. Ved Verdens Ende will be directed by Tomas Villum Jensen.
