First Teaser For David Morley’s French Horror MUTANTS

Will Mutants director David Morley be the next big thing in the current wave of French horror?  I’m not much of a betting man but I’d pretty happily put down a few bucks on the “yes” side of that wager.  And here’s why:

Last year Morley turned out a little film called Morsure - that’s Bitten in English - a tight, nasty little were-beast short that ran about twenty minutes and totally kicked the audience’s butt when I screened it at the Worldwide Short Film Festival.  It was a lean, vicious piece of work that looked fantastic on screen, ramped the tension up to eleven and proved beyond any doubt that Morley knew how to take a familiar concept and make it shockingly fresh again.

And here Morley is with his debut feature, Mutants.  And once again he’s putting a fresh spin on a familiar genre, this time the zombie picture - a genre that, like its subject, just refuses to stay dead.  I caught an extended promo of this in Cannes lat year and all of the Morley trademarks were in full force - the tension, the crisp and cold cinematography, the bursts of unsettling violence and - most importantly - the attention to character that gives everything that extra kick.  What Morley’s done here to breathe new life into the genre is incredibly simple but incredibly effective.  First, he’s pared the cast way, way back, focusing the action on just two characters.  And second, he’s made the zombie transformation take a very, very long time - forcing one of his leads to watch her lover slowly degrade, break down and turn upon her when he becomes infected.  Fast zombies?  Slow zombies?  The real horror comes from watching someone you know and love slowly turn into a monster ...

Though the release date has still not been announced the first teaser has arrived and you can find it below the break.

Love the hospital in winter setting.

It annoys me how european cinema is following suit more and more with the American format. The reason I used to watch French, German or Asian film is because it’s not American, but this is no longer the case.
Even the marketing and publicity behind films such as these are very blatantly capitalist and typical of industrial “button-pushing” in order to procure seats in the cinema house.
European cinema, which was once a great, artistic middle finger to passive, submissive film, is now hollowing itself into a husk of cheap gags, jumpy horror scenes and meaningless love stories.
Business has robbed the art of all its life.

The only french movie that I’ve ever really enjoyed was Dobermann, but the short film bitten looks interesting. Where can I find it though?
