Thanks for doing the summary. I never really look at the DVD Calender, if it’s not in my RSS feed, I generally don’t see it, so this will solve that problem.

  2. jon pais 12/06/2005 @ 8:29pm

According to Romain Le Vern of the French site DVDrama, the release date for the R3K Sympathy for Lady Vengeance ia the 20th of December. The 2-disc set will consist of two versions: the 1st will be in color and the 2nd with the picture gradually passing from color to b&w;. The Korean DVD will feature Dolby Digital 2.0 and Dolby Digital 5.1 (solely for the color version), while the 2nd disc (the color to b&w;version) will boast a DTS 5.1 soundtrack.
As usual, the DVD will be outfitted with English subtitles.

    Disc 1 (color version)
    • Director’s and production designer’scommentary
    • Commentary by the actress Lee Young-Ae
    • Making-of Sympathy for Lady vengeance
    • Caracters of Lady Vengeance
    • Alternate takes
    • Photos
    • Promotion

    Disc 2 (color to b&w;version)
    • Commentary by a Korean film critic
    • Commentary by a non-Korean film critic
    • A look at the director Park Chan Wook “Mr Vengeance”
    • A short film by the director
    • The style of Lady vengeance
    • Sympathy for Lady vengeance at the Venice film festival
    • Director’s choices

As my French is not perfect, esp. re: special features jargon, it is possible that i have translated a few things incorrectly. But Mr Le Vern, a native French speaker, has mispelled “Korea”, and gives the release date for the R3K DVD as 20 December 2006 [sic]

  3. Geert Jan 12/07/2005 @ 3:43am

Yep, 20 December is most likely the release date. It’s reported by X here too, and dvdfromkorea.com also lists it for that date. It’s just that for the calendar I used December 30th because that’s what it says on the YesAsia page, which the link goes to. They’ll probably change it to the 20th soon.

  4. x 12/07/2005 @ 11:01pm

    few things:

Rental for Duelist will be out on December 21. Super Duper version in January.

There might be a Limited Edition for Dongmakgol, coming out roughly the same day as the normal edition. Still no details, but should be limited to 500/1000 copies. Might have a OST CD, but I doubt there’ll be more discs.

Park’s revenge trilogy was pushed to February/March.

The DVDRama specs are taken from Korean etailers, so yes. They’re right.

Release date for those might change, but all out before the 23rd.

BTW… if he wrote ‘Coree’ (sorry, too lazy to turn on European coding to add the accent ^_^), it’s the correct spelling, in French. And lots of people in Korea actually use Corea, so if that’s what he wrote, it’s not a mistake, technically.

  5. x 12/07/2005 @ 11:06pm

here’s list of specs for Lady Vengeance, correct one, that is.

    Audio Commentary Disc 1 (Colour)
    1. Park Chan-Wook, Lee Young-Ae
    2. Park, DP Jung, Art Director Jo Hwa-Sung
    3. Critic Kim Young-Jin (Awesome! ^_^)

    Extras
    1. Making of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
    2. Characters for Lady Vengeance
    3. Alternate Scenes
    4. Snapshot
    5. Promotion

    Disc 2 - B&W;Fade
    1. Park Chan Wook. Mr. Vengeance
    2. Style for Lady Vengeance
    3. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance in Venezia
    4. Director’s Choice

the short film is NOT by Park, btw. If that’s still part of the package.

  6. jon pais 12/08/2005 @ 2:25am

Thank you for the additional info...need to brush up on my French! smile

  7. x 12/11/2005 @ 3:25pm

OK, confirmed details for Limited Edition of Dongmakgol:

Same exact 2 DVD, plus OST and random signed copies. Package will of course be a little different (digipack probably. Will post pictures when I get them). Limited to 5,000 sets. Releases on 22nd just like the normal edition, and only costs 5K Won retail more, so you’ll see pretty quickly if your store of choice is overpricing.

  8. EW 12/12/2005 @ 10:03am

I’m kind of miffed about the non-special edition release of Eraserhead.

I mean, it is awesome. My only complaint is that a month ago I bought the special edition. At that ridiculous price. For only a frickin’ box.

I would’ve loved to get my hands on this newest release, skipping over the special edition, but fate has other things in mind, I guess . . .

  9. beavis 12/12/2005 @ 11:58am

I myself am really looking forward to the dvd release of the Japanese movie “Peep ‘tv’ Show”. Midnight Eye only has a Japanese release on their DVD checklist but I just found out the Facets Multimedia are releasing this underground movie too!

    (DVD-DV86927 - NOT YET RELEASED: - Available on 02/27/2006)

I have seen this movie at the 2004 International Film Festival Rotterdam where it won the Fipresci prize and I thought it was great. But it didn’t get a lot of media attention and the public opinion wasn’t great either… I guess because it’s a small depressing movie made with a lot of punk attitude. Some Twitch fans might like it very much though. And there is a lot more stuff coming from Facets as well: An Artaud documentary, a new Sokurov disc...lots of interesting stuff.

  10. Michelle 12/13/2005 @ 1:09pm

Facets puts out a lot of interesting films but unfortunately their transfers can pretty awful...I’m looking forward to End of August at the Hotel Ozone anyway, though

  11. x 12/21/2005 @ 5:17am

Dongmakgol Limited pushed to Dec. 29. Regular edition is out tomorrow.

  12. x 12/26/2005 @ 10:02pm

니기미… They pushed the Dongmakgol Limited again, this time to January 4. Screw that… I’m going for the normal one. Grrrr…

  13. jon pais 01/03/2006 @ 8:47pm

Wedding Campaign available for preorder thru Yesasia. Cost: $29.99. Release date given as 27th January. Nice shot of packaging on their site as well.

  14. DMack 01/13/2006 @ 1:34pm

Sonatine Ultimate Limited Edition? I’d kill for a Sonatine ANY edition here in Canada

  15. Ken Meyer 01/23/2006 @ 7:43am

Any idea when Season 1 of “The Smurfs” will be out on DVD ?

food of the gods!!!  yippee!!!  i had the chance to see this a while back on amc or tnt monster vision or somewhere and i loved every single retarded minute of it....especially the slow motion rats eating the matchbox volkswagen.

  17. logboy 09/27/2007 @ 9:04am

    welcome back GJ. nice work.

  18. Simon Abrams 10/15/2007 @ 6:15am

    What’s in the Godzilla box?

  19. Geert Jan 10/15/2007 @ 6:31am

Good question, wish I knew more about it. All I know it’s a Godzilla box from Classic Media, who also released the Godzilla 2-disc SE and a bunch of other classic Godzilla movies, uncut and in Japanese. I’m assuming this will be a collection of their past releases.

  20. Kurt Halfyard 10/15/2007 @ 12:49pm

Fido just got pushed back to Nov. 6th (from Oct. 23) - Arrgh.

  21. Raku 10/28/2007 @ 2:39pm

I have good but very late news for you Ken Meyer 2 years after your post here Season 1 of “The Smurfs” will be coming to dvd!!! season 1 volume 1 is scheduled for February! :p

“Presented in Full Frame with English Mono audio and optional English subtitles, extras include a bonus episode (The Smurfs’ Springtime Special) and Smurfs: The Music Video.”

  25. Tuan Jim 01/09/2008 @ 2:06pm

R2 UK “Princess” has been delayed from 7 Jan to (according to amazon.co.uk’s page) 25 Feb.

  26. Tuan Jim 02/26/2008 @ 12:04pm

Ok, according to Amazon’s Email, “Princess” R2 UK is no longer scheduled for yesterday - and isn’t even listed on amazon UK’s website that I can find now!?!

Anyone heard anything else about a legit subbed release for this one?  What’s up with Tartan anyways?

  27. Geert Jan 02/26/2008 @ 12:28pm

The Amazon.co.uk link for Princess still works for me, and it is still listed with a release date of February 25th. But it does say “we don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock”, so yes, it seems something is up at Tartan.

Apologies for the outdated info on the calendar btw, I’ve been lax with updating, I’ll get on it asap.

  28. Tuan Jim 02/26/2008 @ 12:44pm

Well I didn’t follow my original link to it, but running a search for “Princess” I couldn’t find the original page for it at all - unless I missed it somewhere.

  29. Ard Vijn 02/26/2008 @ 2:46pm

I was amazed when I found a copy of “Princess” in the bargain bin for 9 Euro, this very weekend. Turns out it has been for sale over here since July!

Took me a while to figure out what had happened: this version only has Dutch and French subs.
So I looked a bit further and bought Dutch versions of “The Unseeable”, “Adam’s Apples”, “The Uninvited” (which isn’t new but is hard to get with English subs for a decent price), all for cheap…

  30. ASIAN FLIX 02/27/2008 @ 8:34am

Gabriel is already avail on [r1], also Warlords is also out with Eng Subs

  31. John A 02/27/2008 @ 1:48pm

Typhoon was a bloated over done Hollywoodish action thriller that was completely forgettable. The ones I’m looking forward to are M and Funky Forest.

  32. ASIAN FLIX 02/27/2008 @ 4:50pm

Typhoon was a very good Action/Thriller, it was not what you would call great, but a very good action/thriller.

  33. kidlazarus 02/27/2008 @ 9:35pm

If you’re in NYC, a certain spot on St Mark’s already has the (r1)No Country for Old Men on the racks.

  34. Rhythm-X 02/27/2008 @ 10:45pm

I wish TYPHOON was a little bit more forgettable, because I still can remember bits and pieces of it and it’s pissing me off.

  35. Tuan Jim 03/20/2008 @ 1:28pm

Well Princess just shipped from Amazon UK so I guess we’ll see about that now.

  36. ChevalierAguila 04/09/2008 @ 12:04am

Come Drink With Me finally coming out by the Weinsteins? We’ll see.

  37. guizhang 05/13/2008 @ 7:20pm

nice, didn’t know maiko haaaan!!! was getting an r1 release. great film - picking it up for sure. also that help me eros cover is pretty hot. i haven’t seem lee kang sheng’s other film he directed - assuming his style is similar to tsai ming liang?

  38. TheOrientalNightfish 06/01/2008 @ 7:06am

As well as ‘Azur and Asmar,’ to add to this there’s the r1us DVDs of Ocelot’s ‘Princes and Princesses’ and ‘Kirikou and the Wild Beast’ on July 29th 2008 – just a day after ‘Azur and Asmar.’

  39. TheOrientalNightfish 07/03/2008 @ 10:55am

As a correction, rather than an addition, those DVDs of Tropical Malady (Sud pralad) and Dororo are both all regions according to Amazon, making them [r0uk] and [r0us] respectively. Maybe worth adding, however, is a new [r0uk] release of Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (Valerie a týden divu) from Second Run DVD on 25 August 2008.

  40. Pusheye 07/27/2008 @ 9:45am

Is the upcoming release of Blood Simple the same copy found in the Cohen Brothers box set?  I also can’t wait to check out the new R1 release of Tai-Chi Master.  That’s one of my favorite Jet Li flicks, and the Dragon Dynasty releases have been pretty solid, as far as R1/Weinsten stuff goes.
Also of note:  David Mamet’s “Redbelt” comes to dvd August 26.

  41. rtorso 07/29/2008 @ 4:53pm

Peur(s) du noir DVD is available from August 18 at Amazon.Fr
    http://www.amazon.fr/Peur-s-du-noir-Arthur-H/dp/B001B84SHQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1216212870&sr=1-1
Does anyone know if this release will have english subtitles?
    Does it need them?

    Thanks.

  42. rtorso 07/29/2008 @ 4:55pm

    Sorry, I meant August 21

  43. TheOrientalNightfish 07/29/2008 @ 5:49pm

French DVDs are rarely English friendly and they’re especially unlikely to bother with English subtitles for something which has already been picked up for North American distribution (even if they would still be useful for UK denizens such as me). And yes, you will need subtitles, at least for some of the segments, so I’d advise waiting for the IFC release if you can stand to (and have some way of playing region 1 discs).

  44. Simon Abrams 07/29/2008 @ 6:35pm

They’re all in French, even the Chucky Burns segment.

  45. rtorso 07/30/2008 @ 3:02am

    i can wait. just.

    thanks for the information.

  46. Ard Vijn 08/19/2008 @ 1:46pm

    An English-friendly version of Dai-Nipponjin? I’m there!

    (and about time too...)

  47. TheOrientalNightfish 08/22/2008 @ 2:55pm

These may interest you: La Antena [r2uk] on 18 August 2008 and Takeshi Kitano Collection [r2uk] on 6 October 2008 (notable for including the previously unreleased in the UK A Scene at the Sea and Kids Return).

  48. Simon Abrams 08/22/2008 @ 3:14pm

I’m going to blind buy LA ANTENA for sure.

  49. TheOrientalNightfish 09/10/2008 @ 8:19am

The “Brave Story” film, which has been somewhat covered by Twitch, got a [r4au] release on 20 August 2008 and a [r2uk] one on 8 September 2008. Also worth mentioning that Navarre are also releasing that first GeGeGe-no-Kitarô live action on Blu-ray in North America, on the later date of 18 November 2008.

  50. TheOrientalNightfish 09/10/2008 @ 9:25am

Correction: The 2007 film, which is what I meant, isn’t the first. There were two live-action TV specials, in 1985 and 1987, http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=DSTD-6919 being the first of them.

And two more additions: The live-action Sukeban Deka film film “Yo-Yo Girl Cop” gets a [r2uk] DVD on 22 September from 4Digital Media, as does “Death Note: the Last name” on 13 Oct 2008.

  51. TheOrientalNightfish 09/15/2008 @ 3:42pm

Sorry to seem like I’m spamming this; there’s just been a lot of relevant stuff released recently. Next up is what seems to be a [r1] release of “Azur & Asmar: The Princes’ Quest” – http://www.amazon.com/Azur-Asmar-Princes-Sean-Barrett/dp/B001DJ7PY6 – on 11 November 2008. And the Kisarazu Cat’s Eye movie on Amazon is http://www.amazon.com/Kisarazu-Cats-Eye-Junichi-Okada/dp/B000JU8H5G
