Help Me Rebuild My DVD Library!

Huzzah! Just got off the phone with my insurance broker and things are finally wrapping up post break-in. The check, as they say, is in the mail. Which means I will very soon have a bucket of money to rebuild my stolen DVD library.

Now, I liked the batch of stuff that I had, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't be better, so I'm soliciting your input. Here's what I want: In the comments section below post for me your top five domestic titles (domestic in this case being North American), your top five imports, top five guilty pleasures, and your top (bottom?) five films to stay the hell away from. I'll take 'em under advisement ... Ready? Go!

I could give you so many more than five...

Domestic:
Taxi Driver
Star Wars Trilogy (I have the old, untampered with, vhs version, but I'll probably end up springing for the DVDs)
Exorcist
Lost In Translation
Punch Drunk Love (and every other PT Anderson movie)

Imports:
Musa: The Warrior
Allegro non Troppo (Italian spoof of Disney's Fantasia - really funny)
301/302
Asoka
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams
Junk

Guilty Pleasures:
Re-Animator (plus bride of and beyond)
Half Baked
A Life Less Ordinary (any Ewan McGregor movie, really)
Romeo Is Bleeding (any Gary Oldman)
Harry and the Hendersons
Teen Wolf 2 (What can I say, I love Jason Bateman)
John Carpenter's Body Bags (with guest appearances by Mark Hamill and Sam Raimi, if you can spot him!)

Bottom Movies
Q (quetxcoatl, although I would be surprised if you could find it on DVD)
The Avengers (It had potential, but it sucked)
The Guyver (sorry Mark Hamill)
I could think of a billion crappy movies.

OK, and can anyone remember the name of the movie where, in the beginning, Tim Roth swallows a HUGE ruby or other stone (he's ducking behind a wagon or something when he does it, in the mud), and then he has sex with a lady, and then it, uh, comes out later? I'm leaving a lot out here - that's just the beginning of the movie. But I can't for the life of me remember the name of it.

Dang, I bought the Canadian version of Saddest Music in the World for the better price and cover art! I'm a sucker.

I wonder how many of Todd's missing DVDs were bought before the inevitable delayed special editions came out? This may be a good chance to get nicer versions of some faves. Conversely, how many are now out of print?

Sorry for not categorising them, but here's some more to consider:

- American Splendor
- Crumb
- The Twilight Samurai (I have R3, there may be a better version... apparently decent prints of the film are hard to come by)
- Japanese Story (R4)
- Porco Rosso
- My Neighbour Totoro
- The League of Gentlemen (I don't think I need to write this however)
- Waking Ned Devine
- Dancer in the Dark
- Poltergeist
- An American Werewolf in London
- Lilo & Stitch
- Almost Famous
- High Fidelity
- The Man Who Wasn't There

Some guilty pleasures there perhaps... I'd definitely second the motions for Ed Wood, Brazil (Criterion) and Lost in Translation as well.

Can't believe nobody mention The Evil dead films!
Todd I feel your pain. I've had my place broken into and I lost about 100 DVD's, my player and my Playstation. Some of the DVD's were Criterion releases not easily or cheaply available now. A couple of years before I had my place broken into for the first time and they stole all my CD's. They left only one, Ol Dirty Bastard, the bastards.
I'm no good with lists so I'll just say The Evil dead flicks and leave it at that.

» Posted by Swarez at May 3, 2005 09:13 PM

I'm just gonna list a few top movies that I always go back too:

Six String Samurai
Dead Alive
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Mulholland Drive
Memento
The Man Who Wasnt There
Pi
Run Lola Run
Pulp Fiction
Gozu

ok, so thats what just happens to be infront of me at the time..
