Pusher 2 Trailer!

pusher.jpgWhy, yes, I did just find a Danish trailer site ...

I've just come across the trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's sequel to his violent look at Danish drug culture and it looks pretty amazing. The original Pusher is a film that I've nearly picked up several times but have always held back for some reason and this might have just put me over the edge. I know we've got readers in that part of the world, so someone must have seen this as well as the original ... thoughts?

Mads Mikkelson stars in this as the titular Pusher and considering that he has only been seen in North America in comic roles such as Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself or The Green Butchers so this is a huge change for what we typically see from him and his performance looks mighty impressive ... check it here.

i saw this at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, in the netherlands. I was quite surprised how refn continued the same intense atmosphere that he realised in the first movie. Although Mikkelson isn't as good as Kim Bodnia he still is able to carry the movie.

I've been intermittently checking out http://www.pusher.nu/ for several months now; currently, the official website for Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher II (international sales title: "With Blood on My Hands") is there, but I suspect that sooner or later it will be replaced by the official site for Refn's Pusher III (international sales title: "I'm the Angel of Death").

First of all, thanks for Todd for these Danish updates. While everyone knows about Lars von Trier, we do have other auteurs, Nicolas Refn is one of them.

"Pusher 2" is not a direct sequel to "Pusher", but more a thematical sequel within the mileau. In "Pusher", Mads Madsen (in his debut role) played the right hand to Frank (Kim Bodnia), who beat him into near death after fucked him up. Now some years later, Tonny is released from prison, still only a wannabe tough guy.

In essence, "Pusher 2" is an existential film, very close to the motifs of Selby, with whom Refn collaborated on "Fear X", and to whom Refn dedicated this film. It deals with Tonny, who discovers what tough is all about and who matures into a man. It is more painful than "Pusher" and in my opinion one of the best films of 2005.

Nordisk Film originally intended to release a special edition DVD in March, but postponed the release until August, when "Pusher 3" premieres in Denmark. The DVD will have English subtitles on the film, but I cannot say if it also will have on the extras.

Currently Refn is writing the script for his next film, "Billy's People" with Nicholas St. John.

"Pusher" was released by Anchor Bay US (Region 1) in October 2000, 1.66:1 (16x9), with an audio commentary by Refn (actually a conversation between Refn and William Lustig) and a making of featurette. The same version (cant remember if AR is the same or cropped to 1.78:1) was released in June 2000 by Metrodome UK (Region 2).

At the same time, Metrodome also released Refn's second film "Bleeder".

All above versions have English subtitles, and should be available on various etailers.

Amazon UK has got the UK releases of Pusher and Bleeder both available cheap (6.97 each) ... I ordered them both from there ...
