Hellsing. by Gonzo Digimation. Geneon Involved In New OVA Series Based On Manga Source.

hellsing.jpgOriginally a 2001 Gonzo series, Hellsing is an anime rarity. It's a decent horror show, and one that's popular with anime fans who normally seem to shy away from gore unless it's heavily balanced with more familiar elements.

Now AnimeOnDVD.com have exclusively revealed that Geneon, who originally licensed and released the show in the USA, are behind the comissioning / financing of a new series of Hellsing based directly on the original Manga source material. The running time of 35 minutes per epsiode does suggest a relatively short series though, and we will find out more details in time.

Although Gonzo are often said to almost automatically go for violence in there shows, Hellsing remains a firm classic, perhaps as it comes from a time where fans weren't so used to their approach. Worth checking out if you're into good solid stories, nice animation and are tempted by a little blood and guts.

Interesting.
Seems a bit like they are fixing the flaws in the original series; mainly the inconcistencies with the manga and pretty bad animation quality. The original series was fairly entertaining though, so I'm looking forward to this.
The max amount of episodes for this will be 13, OVAs never exceed 13 episodes and they could be compared to "mini-series".

Sorry -- why does 35 minutes per episode suggest anything? Isn't that, if anything, slightly long for an anime TV series?

Well like I said. The 'series' is tagged as OVA, original video animation (or OAV, Original animated video, if you like).
OVA means that the series is a straight-to-video title and the episode count will not be more than 13, perhaps less. The episodes in OVAs are usually 30-45min long which indeed is longer than your average 20-25min anime series episode. You could think of OVAs as the equivalent of TV mini-series with less parts, but the parts are longer.

So I guess the "suggests" refers to the running time being more in line with an OVA rather than a TV series? That makes sense. Brain-freeze moment -- been getting a lot of those lately...

While you're almost certainly right about the 13-episode OVA standard, don't think of it as a law or anything. Tenchi Muyo and Ginga Eiyu Densetsu spring to mind.

Tenchi was OVA? I thought that series was a juggernaut in Japan...

So I'm told. There's about a bizillion different spin-offs, and I think it was on TV at one point, but it started off as an OVA. Or something. I never liked it much, to tell the truth. :)

Ginga eiyu densetsu certainly seems to be an exception but I think we can agree that OVAs are pretty much 13 episodes or shorter, haven't personally seen an OVA that was longer than that. The Tenchi OVA, if I remember correctly, is broken in to three parts so in essence it's just OVA1,2,3 and not one long OVA. They recently continued it with new eps by the way.
Ah well.. this turned out to be some pointless nitpicking from my part :)

tv shows always seem to be 25 minutes, with few exceptions, and then they run shorter not longer times... i think. not wanting to start the "argument" again...!
