Koji Yakusho. Two Subtitled DVD Releases Of Note Coming Up In Japan.

yakusho.jpgVery very tempting releases featuring Koji Yakusho. Who he? He's the guy in a lot of the Kiyoshi Kurosawa films. So, what's so special? Well, out of all the actors i've seen over many years watching Japanese movies, he stands out as just plain stunning. If you ever wanted proof that the best talent simply doesn't live and work in America then just watch him. Simply unbelievably talented man.

Firstly is the romantic thingy recently remade in America with J-Lo and Richard Gere... unsucessfully i might add called "Shall We Dance?" out April 7th 2005. It was a huge hit in Japan some years back, and for some reason we now get a Subtitled release. Tempting. Very Tempting. Yesasia.com page is here.

Secondly is 'Univeristy of Laughs' on May 27th 2005, a comedy (though played in the straight-looking Manzai style) released at the cinema only last October 2004. The official site is still up, and the trailer is pretty non-descript at best. Mark Shillings' review at Japan Times is still up (4 out of 5 stars) : go read. Standard Edition here, Deluxe Edition here.

Pimmiks' little-known Koji Yakusho website is also worth a look, as is his official site in Japanese.
