A little something I stumbled across thanks to the good folks at Greencine ...
I'm a big fan of Japanese author Haruki Murakami and unbeknownst to me - until about five minutes ago - there is a film based on a Murakami short story playing at Sundance this year. There's no trailer yet but I did find the official Tony Takitani website, which is chock full of gorgeous photography ... if anybody reading this happens to be at Sundance, check the film out and let us know what you think ...

I had a chance to see it at the Vancouver International Film Festival along with L'amant and IZO. Being a fan of Murakami, I was quite excited to see this film. It had a good story and some great cinematography. With that being said, the qualm I have with this film is that it relied heavily on voiceover narration. Besides that issue, the film was worth watching.

Saw it at the London film festival. Another Murakami fan. It's more like an illustrated picture book - the (highly stylised) images serve the voiceover. I didn't find the narration tiring, precisely because it brought the author's voice into the film exactly as you would read it off the page (which would generally be called a lazy approach to scriptwriting but here it feels right). It's a very slight story, beautifully shot, and like some of the best Murakami there's no pulse whatsoever - events which would otherwise be melodramatic are presented calmly and contemplatively, which makes for a lot of humour. Very dreamlike

It was just picked up at Sundance, and according to Indiewire, will get a limited North American release possibly in May or June
