Kung Fu Hustle sets box office records in Asia!

Kung-Fu-Hustle.jpgI should really stop reading up on things about Kung Fu Hustle. Ever since the 'Third Reel Fiasco' at TIFF this past September my anger and rage has been growing the more good stuff I hear about this movie. Knowing that I was but hours away from experiencing the bliss and glee that can only come from viewing a Stephen Chow movie only to have it snatched away from me like a small child is by a dingo? Well that just hurts real deep.

Kung Fu Hustle opened around Asia this past weekend and it broke records everywhere it played. In mainland China it broke the single and three day records set by HERO two years ago. In Hong Kong it almost broke the three day record in just two days. In Taiwan it broke the opening day record set by The Day After Tomorrow. Then it broke the two day record set by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. And finally, in Singapore, it set a new record for the island nation for opening weekends. It holds the No.7 spot at the All-Time Opening ranking, blowing past big Hollywood titles like The Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter and The Mummy franchises.

If any of our readership from these areas has seen it and would like to pass along their thoughts and feelings about this movie please e-mail me and we'll post your review.

::: EXTRA ::: If you go to MonkeyPeaches and scroll down you can also find a link to a 40 minute making of featurette. I'm trying to d/l it now as I type this. No telling how many seeders and leechers there are. If you don't have a bit-torrent program you will need it to d/l this special. MonkeyPeaches has made a link available for that.

It's still early so we haven't heard from anyone yet. But if you're out there and you saw Kung Fu Hustle this weekend in Asia then drop us a line and let us know what you thought.

Love. Bliss. and Pure Joy. That is the best way to describe this new movie...It blows Shaolin Soccer away (and I love that movie).

I was one of those lucky people at the TIFF to see the first (and only public) screening. (OK it's difficult not to say nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah)...I'm stoked for the DVD release though...The movie has supreme re-watch value!

My Capsule is here.

Because my Link didn't work...Here is a small capsule review from the Toronto film Festival Screening of Kung Fu Hustle:

At the film festival there are usually so few comedies. When seeing thirty films with strong and complex subject matter it is a treat to just set back and be mindlessly entertained. This is one of the most enjoyable movie experiences i've had in a while. It is the Warner Brother's Looney Toons meets the Shaw Brother's kung-fu! Director/Star Stephen Chow has not had his films imported across the ocean to large audiences despite the fact that he constantly beats Jackie Chan and Jet Li at the chinese box office. His movies combine a chinese sense of humour (a strange blend of humilation and violence passed off as farce) with lots of mainstream eastern and western film references. His Shaolin Soccer is a near-masterpiece of madcap lunacy with state of the art special effects and a campy premise.
Here Chow has upped the bar so high, I don't think he will ever top it. To give away the story is to destroy the many, many hilarious surprises that pile on top of each other. Suffice it to say that when the big city axe-gang (who do cheoreographed dance-numbers with their axes in 1930's gangster suits) moves in on pig-sty alley, the local residents aren't going to take it.
It is all very sumptuous and cinematic. It's the Singing in the Rain of Kung-fu films.
I cannot recommend this movie enough! When it plays in North America, and it will play, it is a great night at the movies.
WARNING: Kung-Fu Hustle is cheesy as hell, but a little boys kung-fu wet dream.

Kurt: We mean this with the kindest of affections...

BASTARD!!! :::insert shaking of fist here:::

We don't blame you of course since it wasn't your screening where the third reel tore. We blame the industry hob nobs [until of course we ever become one of the brood] and their screening.

Warmest regards.

Mack:

A buddy of mine had tickets to the world cup of hockey going on in Toronto on the same night of the KungFu Hustle screening...I don't know if he is kicking himself, but I feel he made the poorer choice for going to the game (Even though Canada did win).

Ah yes. Hockey. The lure of that mistress has led many a strong man down the wrong path.
