Those disappointed with the video quality of the Chinese and Hong Kong DVD releases of House ofFlying Daggers will have another option a little closer to home pretty soon ... I haven't seen much in the way of specs yet but Sony's North American DVD of the film is slated to release May 15th and it's a fairly safe bet that Sony's releases will offer pretty much the best transfer world wide ...

I'll tell you...the new 2 disc HK DVD pretty much wipes the floor with that horrible single disc edition released last month. It's really worth it if you can't wait, and if you want to spend a little extra you can get the LE, which comes with the soundtrack, a 140 page book, and a bamboo pen, not to mention the remastered 2 disc set. I'm still betting that the US disc will have better picture quality, but will it have DTS-ES sound? Not bloody likely.

I had heard it wasn't much of an improvement but just glanced at some screenshot comparisons and it definetly IS a huge improvement (http://www.tower3a.com/cgi-bin/ut/topic_show.cgi?id=5002&pg=2&h=1&bpg=1&age=3650).
Now.. the problem is - should I get this, wait for the Japanese version (no subs but probably superior visuals), as I was planning to, or double dip :)
I think I'll go browse cd-wow to see what the HK LE or SE costs.

I'd almost definitely say to skip the Japanese version. No subs? No way. You can always wait and see how the Korean edition fares, but I'd think it wouldn't be a huge improvement over this new HK set.

Fabool, you blessed man ... I was just about to post and ask someone to post screen caps. I assume the top pictures are the new edition. That is a pretty hefty improvement ...
I'm gonna wait for the Korean releases to see if they come up with anything comparable to the three disc release of Hero I've got, myself ... if not I'll probably stick with what I've got until the R1 comes out ...

I'm guessing the US DVD will have the cuts that monkeypeaches.com reported. I want an uncut version, so unless there is an "Unrated, Uncut" US DVD edition, I'm going to have to get the Asian release.
Anyone know when the Korean editions will be released? Todd - you mentioned the Korean release of Hero. Does it have the extended cut - without that blasted bug in the English subtitle track?

The Korean version of Flying Daggers will be out at the end of January, I think. It could very well be pushed back again, so who knows. I hadn't thought about the cuts in the US version until you mentioned it, so yeah, I'd say avoid that one if you can.

After seeing the screen captures for the EDKO 2-Disc edition, I decided to go buy it. Unfortunately, none of the sites I know sell it due to North American rights or something like that? Know any site that would carry this?

Layoyo...old faithful. :)

The Korean Hero Ultimate Edition does not have the extended cut. The packaging is very nice but the release (video/audio) isn't really anything special but not too bad either, pretty similar to the EDKO release if I remember correctly.
Check www.cd-wow.com for the new HoFD DVDs. They ship all over the world and the shipping is free and prices reasonable. The LE is pretty pricey at over $50 or so. At Layoyo it's about half but they have listed it with 14 delivery units which raises the shipping costs (in my case to Finland) to about $25!
I think I'll double-dip on this one, or get this EDKO version and see how the Japanese/Korean versions turn out. I don't mind the missing subs on the Japanese version as I watch all my DVDs on my HTPC, so I can just get them off the EDKO dvd and overlay them for use with the Japanese one.

I just trust that Todd will order the right one any time. Sometimes I don't even know I've ordered something until he tells me it's arrived. All trust in Todd.

www.cdwow.com have listed the 2 disc and the LE...this was the same day I recieved my edko disc a few days before christmas. Sucks...

The only releases with the extended cut of Hero are the Chinese EVD and the crappy Face edition. The three disc Korean edition is the theatrical cut with the opening and closing text scrolling in English and with a ton of bonus features, including a few in English. Plus it's just beautifully packaged and includes a photo-book ...
I've seen both versions of Flying Daggers and I actually prefer the cut version ... the original had some major problems in the third act and the little bit of trimming goes a long, long way towards correcting those.

But it deletes blood and that's just LAME.
And if you're deciding between the LE or the regular 2 disc, get the LE. It's frigg'n incredible!! Best set I've seen out of HK yet. If it came from Japan, the thing would cost $100. Trust me, I've spent many a hundred on disappointing Japanese LE sets.

Ordered the LE set - here's to hoping it won't get caught by the customs officials for additional fees.
crazybee, you better be right about the LE being great or I'm going to have you for breakfast :)

dvdfromkorea.com seems to have listed the Korean disc now for a 01/18/2005 release http://www.dvdfromkorea.com/shop/p_detail.asp?idx=1809&genre=Action/Adventure
The second disc has a hefty 180min runtime, wonder if the making of- and other material are the same as on the EDKO version. And I like the green of the cover :)
