Immortel Already on DVD in Asia?

immortel.jpgJust a friendly heads up here ... if you, like me, pre-ordered the French edition of Enki Bilal's Immortel you might want to cancel that order. Got a call from fellow Twitch-er Nick today telling me that he'd just rented the film from the local cult video store. This was a bit of a surprise because as far as I knew there was no legal version of this available anywhere in the world yet. I was wrong. The version he rented is an Asian release, I believe either mainland China or Taiwan. I haven't been able to turn up a retailer of it yet, but I will, and I can guarantee it will be a good bit cheaper than the French edition. Yes, it does include English subtitles. I can't read a word of it - a little help? - but I believe that this is the spec sheet from the Asian manufacturer. There's also a Russian edition floating around out there but I have no clue if it's subtitled.

There is always the possibility that this is a high grade bootleg but I won't know more until I hear back from the retailers that I've contacted about it ...

I got the Russian DVD through Diabolik and it is in English (Russian by default, but English is an option). They don't always have it in stock, so email and tell them you're interested in getting one.

By the way, the Russian DVD I got is region 5 PAL, so you'd need an all-region player that can handle non-NTSC discs.

Mike, what did you think of it? I was quite disappointed with most of the movie - the story, dialouge, character reactions to the cg environment, etc...... it did have some amazing set secens though too it at times.

Good to know ... I've used Diabolik in the past. He tends to be a bit pricey but he's got amazing stuff in stock all the time and his service is always excellent. I just emailed the Russian company I got Night Watch from to see if they've got it in stock ... couldn't turn it up on their search engine ...

Found a listing for it on a Russian site here, and for cheap - about $16 Canadian - but the listing says it's in full frame. Full frame is evil.

It was pretty bad. It basically just had lots of pretty cityscapes, a few good 'ideas,' and very poor execution throughout.

By far, my favorite parts of the movie were its cityscapes (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11), but I'll also provide you with some shots of its crappy character animation (1 2 3) and some miscellaneous shots (1 2 3 4 5).

My copy from Diabolik is widescreen. The film does a good job of retaining the feel of the comics, but like folks have said already, it falls apart in several respects. For me, the biggest flaw is having a mix of live and CGI human characters. Being consistent with one or the other would have helped a lot. As it is, it's that much harder to suspend my disbelief. Still, it's loaded with great scenes and a nice palette, and is a real oddity.

saw this dvd in asia on the shelf. fortunately i have the sense to avoid this like the putrid stench it really is.
please save your hard earn case for either CASSHERN or APPLESEED.

There's a lot of the Immortel DVD asian release version on Ebay. Some are selling from $2.99 - 24.00
