TIFF Canadian Announcements - Cronenberg, Maddin, Weirdsville!

(Posted In Toronto Film Festival 2007 USA and Canada )

tiff07.jpgA large release on Canadian films to be screened at this years Toronto International Film Festival went up on their website recently. There are several titles of interest around these parts, including the premiere of David Cronenberg's Russian mafia thriller Eastern Promises. The film is getting the Gala Treatment along with Denis Arcand's new film L'Âge des Ténèbres (Days of Darkness), a film that involves the fantasy life of a clock-punching civil servant (fantasies which presumably include easy on the eyes German actress Diane Kruger).

Allan Moyle's slacker-drug comedy Weirdsville (which amongst other things involves satanists and fantasy re-enactment dwarves) and Guy Maddin's unique take on his hometown, My Winnipeg starring his Mom and narrated (live) by himself promise some of the stranger reflections of the country. Furthermore, there is François Girard's Silk (not to be confused with the Taiwanese ghost story) which stars the always watchable Michael Pitt as a silk merchant who travels to Japan in the 19th Century. There is an interesting Chinese ghost story, They Wait, which features the heady combo of Cheng Pei Pei and Michael Biehn in supporting roles! And for Battlestar Galactica fans, Walk All Over Me features Tricia Helfer as a dominatrix.

This years talent Lab is being hosted by indie favorites John Sayles and Tilda Swinton as well as Canadian film icon Don McKellar.
