Though he's still best known for his work as a graphic designer and illustrator - most notably on a number of Neil Gaiman's works - and his turn at the helm of MirrorMask woke people up to the fact that Dave McKean also knows a thing or two about film, the fact is the man's been working in the medium for years. Problem is that his film output hasn't been widely available anywhere in any format. Until now. August 28th sees the DVD release of the Keanoshow, a collection of seventeen short films on disc. Yum.
Thanks to Don for pointing it out.
I really liked Mirrormask and love his Sandman covers... but more for the fact that they were unusual and instantly recognizable (especially in that medium) than for their inherent beauty.
So now I'm holding a very serious discussion with myself about buying this. Has anyone seen any of these short films of his?
I saw the first few minutes of 'The Week Before'. I'm totally biased when it comes to McKean's art, but even still, his ideas translate well to film. He's also a very good story teller. Just check out 'Cages' if you want proof.
As I told Todd, I'm giddy as a school girl over this release, and shall be reviewing it for Twitch. Thanks, Todd!
You can see some of his stuff at http://www.squidoo.com/davemckeanfilm/. It's YouTube quality, but you can get the basic idea.
Thanks Don, still thinking about it!
And you are right about "Cages", the guy can tell a story (and very intelligently too I might add).
