Well, television anime, anyway. Here's why this will be the big, must see event of the year:
2007 marks the twentieth anniversary of Production IG, one of the finest animation houses in Japan and one that we're big fans of here at Twitch. Their body of work is huge but IG will likely always be best known thanks to Mamoru Oshii's heavy involvement in the company and their work on the various incarnations of the Ghost in the Shell franchise.
Now, when a company hits a big anniversary they like to plan a big event to mark it. Ghost Hound is that event for Production IG, a new twenty two episode series due to start airing in the fall. And they've pulled out the big guns on this one. In the writer's chair? Series co-creator Masamune Shirow, the force behind Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed, and writer Chiaki Konaka from Serial Experiments Lain. In the director's seat is Ryutaro Nakamura, also of the much-acclaimed Serial Experiments Lain
Few specifics are known about the show yet but Shirow has described it as "occult tactical action" and the first teaser has turned up online so you can take a gander.

Thanks to Ulrik for the pointer.
Lain and Kino's journey are two of my favourite anime series and this is amazing news. Thanks for the info.
Interesting that Shirow apparently took a break from drawing tentacle porn to create this thing. Not that I have anything against paintings of oily girls being ravished by Cthulhu tentacles...
It's strange that Shirow Masamune manages to capture such interesting ideas from various sf-sources and philosophies, builds fantastically designed worlds which incorporate those...
...and then more or less ruins them with senseless fan-service.
This may be the only author where I'm more looking forward to adaptations of his work rather than ehm... his work itself.
Having said that, this does look interesting and more intimate than most of IG's apocalyptic resumée.
Lain is definitely in my top 5 anime, well beyond its time in terms of story/plot. Besides IG's favorite Shirow involved this is welcome news indeed. The teaser is too short though.
