Sometimes a thing pops up on our forum which is too good to resist putting on the main page. This is one of those times. Thanks go to TheDoug for posting this in our "most beautiful DVD" topic.
You know how Limited Editions of movies on DVD are often gorgeous, especially those from Japan and Korea? Well, it's time to add India to that list. Indian company Excel Home Video released the "Lagaan 3 Disc Special Anniversary Edition Box Set" on the 15th of June and boy is this a beauty! Apparently 6 years is a big thing in India...
DTS, English subs on everything, 2.5 hours making-of documentary, and the extra's are too numerous to mention. Lots of pictures, cards and trinkets as well, and the set comes in a huge etched wooden box. The whole thing weighs approximately 5 pounds, and is limited and numbered to 9999 sets (so hurry...).
It's not exactly expensive either (about 30-40 USD) but shipping can be gutting depending on how close to India you live.
The movie itself is a classic, one of the few Bollywood movies that can be considered an international success. "Lagaan" (aka "Once Upon a Time in India") was even nominated for the Oscar for best non-English movie back in 2001, and the BBC called it one of the 50 movies you need to have seen before you die.
Hopefully this set will be successful enough for more distributors to consider releasing films as gorgeously packaged as this one.

A better look at the box.
You can order it here.
The page in our forum discussing it.
Fair is fair, more info in another forum.
I don't know how many of you've seen this movie, but if you haven't, do so. I'm so getting this box.
Thanks Ardvark for referencing this on the main site. Just as an addenda to your detailed reference points and links a blog for the film hosted by its producer/director is now available at: http://www.lagaandvd.com/blog.php
As an owner of this set, I must say I wasn't disapointed either in the contents or the box or the film. This Indian film has great cinematography, direction and story exposition. (Not your usual Bollywood production.) Those wanting to see screen captures from earlier Region 1 and Region 2 editions should go to http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare2/lagaan.htm as well.
Dear Douglas and all others at Twitchfilm.net,
You may also want to visit http://www.zulm.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9006 for how fans suggested some features, how Excel Home Videos heard us, and for screenshots of the 3-dvd set as well as critical analyses.
Cheers!

Why is it that the R1 DVD is currently unavailable in every online store??
R1 may still be available at axelmusic.com
Anyone else having issues trying to order? It keeps giving me errors when it tries to connect to the payment site (apparently they have a setup similar to CDWow). I may have to write to them again.
Tuan Jim, if you are talking about musicyogi.com then you can e-mail to admin@musicyogi.com
Folks, here's another comparison of all known releases of Lagaan:
