Here's a chapter of world history that I'm sure a great many people would like to forget but Anthony Gilmore doesn't plan to let them. During Japan's period of military expansion hundreds of thousands of women - an estimated two hundred thousand from occupied Korea alone - were taken away from their homes and forced to serve as 'comfort women', fulfilling the sexual needs of the Japanese military officers away from home. With the help of Lost's YunJin Kim, who narrates the picture, Gilmore aims to tell the stories of some of those women with his feature length documentary Behind Forgotten Eyes.
It's a tragic piece of history and Gilmore aims to approach it from as many angles as possible. The film's website is online now with trailer included.

This is outstanding news. There has been precious little documentation available to an English-speaking audience of this inflammatory subject, one which continues to have international repercussions to this day. Back in August of last year, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) announced it was making funding available to selected indie filmmakers in order to produce a series of DVDs (English-subtitled), among them director Byun Young-ju, who made a trilogy of documentaries about former comfort women. The first of these "indie" DVDs came out a couple of months ago, but as yet there has been no word when Byun's works will be made available. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a fall release.
