French PAPRIKA DVD's delayed by Sony?

(Posted In Animation Asia DVD News Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

paprika-face.jpgWell, in a typical case of "Do as I say, don't do as I do" I pre-ordered the French Paprika super edition, the one with the 760-page book (or should I say: tome?).
I don't know conclusively whether or not this thing will have English subs, but as it was supposed to be released today I was hoping to give you all the news on that.

Update:
It's now half a day later and a lot more is known.
Good news first:

-The regular edition is out and has English subs confirmed!!
-Blu-ray is out, seeing as how the regular has confirmed English subs I'd be very surprised if this hasn't.
-A double-bill version packaged with "Tokyo Godfathers" has also been released for 5 Euro more.

The bad news:
-Even though Amazon.fr lists the super-edition as coming in 10-13 days, you can see its page has lost all details including the title extension (it's just called "Paprika", no mention of a limited edition, boxset, any difference with the regular version). Sony and several other sites claim more time is needed for the extras and this version has been moved to the 17th of October. Bummer!

So this replaces the news I posted earlier:

Today I got a message from my supplier saying that Sony has moved the release date to two weeks into the future.
Not a long wait exactly and surely not that unusual, but it gets me wondering: would Paprika's impressive US-box-office have something to do with it?

In the US, Paprika had its VERY limited release several weeks ago, but every subsequent week Sony Pictures has been adding venues, and the weekly box-office still goes up instead of down. We're not talking "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" but still the performance may have been a lot more decent than expected, causing Sony to delay all western DVD-releases for Paprika.

Anyway, the new release schedule says the first week of July and I'll keep you updated!

Ok, so that has now all been debunked. But at least we know that the French Paprika versions have English subs, and a super edition is upcoming.
And now I'll shut up about it until I hold the thing in my hands...

Hi, I live in France and was waiting today to get my copy of Paprika's boxset but according to one the biggest shop in France it's supposed to be out on the 17th of october now....

I went to a "Manor" shop yesterday, and there were like five DVD of Paprika for sale (at 29,90.- Swiss francs, that's about 23 $ or 18 Euros). It was the "simple" edition, not the limited one.

You're right!
Amazon.fr just now lists the regular version as being "in stock". There goes my theory...

But thankfully it will mean that the delay for the LE is not strategic in nature, and therefore the 5th of July date could very well be the real one!

If the regular version is "out there" so to speak, can anyone check if it's got English subs or not? Amazon still won't say...

» Posted by Ardvark at June 20, 2007 06:16 AM

I've checked on my regular local shop at the back of the DVD and YES there is an English subtitle track.

Enjoy!

couple of points :

one of the editions is delayed until october - the super-duper one - as far as i know.

ash-bh, can you confirm english subs on both the DVD and BR as well as the region coding and zones for the discs? thanks.

At the DVDrama forum, in a message dated June 15, a reader posts an e-mail he received from GCTHV after writing them concerning conflicting release date information, which reads (in part), "In order to create new collector "objects" with the help of Satoshi Kon himself, the release of the super edition has been put off until Oct. 17." No word as yet (from readers who've actually played the discs) about subtitling or region-encoding at the site. Couldn't find any info at DVDclassik, either. I'll keep checking. Hope this helps.

i need absolute confirmation on regions and subs on DVD and BR - otherwise it's not worth getting excited... i suspect, seeing as there's a german or dutch edition late august with is uber-subbed, that you might have an oddity or the beginnings of a new practice with regards regions and english subs :

» Posted by logboy at June 20, 2007 01:41 PM

Wow you're right Log, the German one is Uber-subbed and Uber-dubbed:

Tonformate (soundtracks):
Deutsch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Englisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Französisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Spanisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Polnisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Tschechisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Italienisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Japanisch: Dolby Digital 5.1
Japanisch: PCM 5.1 (what the hell is that?)

Untertitel (subs):
Deutsche Untertitel
Englische Untertitel
Türkische Untertitel
Dänische Untertitel
Schwedische Untertitel
Norwegische Untertitel
Holländische Untertitel
Italienische Untertitel
Französische Untertitel
Spanische Untertitel
Portugiesische Untertitel
Polnische Untertitel
Griechische Untertitel
Tschechische Untertitel
Ungarische Untertitel
Kroatische Untertitel
Isländische Untertitel
Slowenische Untertitel
Bulgarische Untertitel
Hebräische Untertitel
Arabische Untertitel
Hindische Untertitel

The shape of things to come? This would make it pretty much worldwide! Well, except for the region 2 mentioned...

» Posted by Ardvark at June 20, 2007 02:50 PM

Huh, Icelandic subtitles. How about that. That probably means that we will be getting it soon as well.

» Posted by Swarez at June 20, 2007 04:10 PM

animeondvd.com forums has a post from someone with the BR in-hand and it states it's A/B/C zoned, and that not only the feature is subbed in english (mentions that there's 'various languages' on there) but that there seems to be subs on the additional features too. ordered via amazon.fr just now - 30euros / $40USD / £20 including delivery. nice.

The Paprika dvd is out now in Holland aswell, it even has an audio commentary and english subs..It came out on the 19th

» Posted by Bart at June 21, 2007 03:49 AM

Tough. I expected to have the super-duper edition on the same day as the regular, but now that there are 4 months dividing them I'll have to make a choice.
Wait or buy? Curses...
Also, can anyone tell me if there are English subs for the Audio Commentary of the French version?

» Posted by Ardvark at June 21, 2007 03:59 AM

They are most likely all the same disc with all the same features. I've noticed that with the Sony anime movies that they've distribute here in Europe in the past. The only difference is the language on the covers.

Hi, I live in Switzerland and I picked up the Regular 2-disk DVD of PAPRIKA. They also had the Blu-Ray DVD as well.
I checked both disks and I will confirm:

FILM: French or Japananese DD 5.1, Japanese DTS; anamorphic video;
English, French, Arab subtitles.
NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES on the audio commentary (only french subtitles)

EXTRAS: Every single extra has English subtitles, and also plentiful other subtitles in other languages. (It's wierd that there are only three language subtitles on the movie, but there are about 10 different language subtitles for the extras).

I would like to also add that this DVD is certainly PAL REGION 2. I have a multi-region DVD player so it played fine on that, but on my laptop computer, which is set for NTSC DVDs, the PAPRIKA DVD did not work. I know once in a while that some non-Region 1 NTSC DVDs or PAL dvds sometimes work on my NTSC DVD-rom, but the French PAPRIKA certainly is not All-Region.

Thanks toddly6666,
that information is much appreciated.
It means that I'll probably buy the Dutch version available now, so I can check the commentary with subs in a language I know. Then in October I'll double-dip for the French super-duper and make someone in my neighborhood happy with my regular version.

» Posted by Ardvark at June 21, 2007 08:04 PM

Where can you get the Dutch version?

» Posted by Swarez at June 22, 2007 07:07 AM

In Fnac france the price of the deluxe edition is 49.95 Euros (67.15 US$) and the release date is october 17. I have tokyo godfathers (also from SONY) and it has the same amount of Dubs and Subs, thats cuz the European Region is so diverse in languages thats is cheaper to make a whole region 2 version for all europe than to make it for each country.

So will "Paprika" be available in ENGLISH AUDIO? When will it be available for sale in the United States (again, English Audio)? Or where are they available on DVD in English audio?

Everyone keeps mentioning about English subtitled, but why not simply watch it in a language that you can actually understand?

Note: I don't really care for subtitles at all. I like to watch and listen to my animated films. Subtitles takes too much attention from the artistry on film.
