With No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood and Bordertown it has been a western kind of weekend for trailers. Here is one more, James Mangold's remake of classic 1957 western 3:10 to Yuma. The update stars Christian Bale, Russell Crowe and Peter Fonda (and look for Firefly's Alan Tudyk in there too). It looks like we are getting a very modern, very kinetic take on the western, and in this case, count me in for a remake that looks like it will hold up to the original. With The Proposition, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Seraphim Falls and Bandidas (and upcoming Takashi Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django and Ji-woon Kim’s The Good, The Bad, and the Weird) we are getting a small but steady trickle of films that play in the great American genre. This is a good thing. More, please.
"Based on the Elmore Leonard short story. In Arizona in the late 1800's, infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Crowe) and his vicious gang of thieves and murderers have plagued the Southern Railroad. When Wade is captured, Civil War veteran Dan Evans (Christian Bale), struggling to survive on his drought-plagued ranch, volunteers to deliver him alive to the "3:10 to Yuma", a train that will take the killer to trial. On the trail, Evans and Wade, each from very different worlds, begin to earn each other’s respect. But with Wade’s outfit on their trail – and dangers at every turn – the mission soon becomes a violent, impossible journey toward each man's destiny."
