Hong Kong's Herman Yau is a director who tends to run a bit hot and cold but he seems to be on a bit of a hot streak right now. Not only is he prolific as all hell at the moment, cranking out an insane number of projects seemingly simultaneously, but his recent material has all been quite well received, enough so that he was the subject of a retrospective at this year's Hong Kong Film Festival. We're all anxiously awaiting the release of his black-magic themed Gong Tau around here, but in the mean time one of his other recent efforts - A Mob Story - is poised to hit DVD June 15th. It's an all region disc and English subtitled so it's fair game for everyone everywhere.
In other DVD news, Susie Au's Ming Ming - which I absolutely adore - is slated to hit DVD at about the same time as Yau's film, though it has yet to be listed, and we're looking for clarification on this edition of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Loft which may or may not include English subtitles depending on who you ask. Anyone got a definitive answer? Oh, and what the hell. Lesbian themed, Isabella Leung starring drama Spider Lillies is coming, too.
Based from what I heard, "A Mob Story" is terrible. Avoid it.
Just watched "Gong Tau" in theatres a couple of days ago. I can add that, in my opinion, it was pretty awful. Laughable CGI, total lack of story, and Maggie Siu is so obnoxiously whiny that you just hope she dies after 15 minutes of the film. Per Cat III, it's a complete gross-out gorefest, and there's some full frontal female nudity, but it doesn't go anywhere.
Prolific, yes, but quality, not so much. I still haven't seen "Whispers and Moans" yet, and that seems much more promising.
"Gong Tau" got mixed review in Hong Kong (which is expected for this kind of movies) Under the shadow of Spider-man 3 and Pirates, "Gong Tau" grossed HK $2 million, which isn't too bad for a Cat III movie. (At least, it has higher HK total gross than "Dog Bite Dog")
"Whispers and Moans" got more generally positive review in Hong Kong. However, I don't think people in other countries will like "Whispers and Moans". In fact, it gor totally negative review in Variety.

Well, there's movies that Herman Yau probably only does for the money, and then there's movies he does for passion - see Shark Busters, From the Queen to the Chief Executive, and perhaps to a lesser extent, On The Edge.
I think he's pretty comparable to Miike in that way. I'll buy Gong Tau, since there hasn't been a good CAT III shocker for a while. But I don't think that Mob Story is worth buying in any way.
