We recently called for a boycott of Midway Games and their new video game quasi-sequel to Hard Boiled, titled Stranglehold, due to their last minute pull out of a sponsorship role at the New York Asian Film Festival. Well, I'm happy to report that Midway have just come back on board with the festival and made good on their commitments. Thus, no more reason to boycott. The 'Presenting Sponsor' slot that was previously theirs is now held by Dragon Dynasty, who stepped into the gap while all this was going down, and Midway are now listed as a 'Contributing Sponsor'.
Furor over, now go enjoy the movies!
Man, good thing.. Midway was probably sweatin' bullets, worried they couldn't recoup without Todd's purchase of Stranglehold.
Do you credit your boycott with having had persuasion, Todd?
Considering that the story was picked up by a number of gaming magazines and Google News, yeah, it had an impact. A film site being irked at them has little impact, gamers turning on them is a different story, though.
True fact: It was a Twitch article on Paris Hilton that caused chaos in the Los Angeles courts today...
Why am I even on-line? It's friday...I have a girlfriend. Surely I should be with her and not spending time with my online cinematic mistress.
And yet, the flesh and blood girlfriend knows nothing about Asian cinema. *sigh*
That IS a dilemma. On the San Francisco front our local critic Mick LaSalle deigned to review Paprika. That caused some tongues to wag. LaSalle has made his contempt for animation widely known and has been upfront about choosing reviews of Criterion material before anyone else at The Chronicle, except the Asian fare, which he has no time for and considers subordinates can handle.
