Studio Shannara Franchise on its Way?

(Posted In Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy USA and Canada )

shannara.jpgWay back when I was 10, Terry Brooks' Shannara books were my Harry Potter series. Tolkien was too dry for my tender sensibilities and Brooks' version (like most post 1960s fantasy, was influenced very strongly by J.R.R.) was fast paced and exciting enough for me at the time. Brooks has been pumping novels out in this particular world for decades and I lost interest in the 1990s. Still the original trilogy of novels would make good fodder for a franchise as each novel jumps a generation instead of following the same characters each and every time directorial and cast switches could make a series a little more distinct. Warner Brothers just scooped up the rights for the first novel "The Sword of Shannara." If this gets on the fast track, the other novels are sure to follow. Just, please kind sirs at WB, no Jeremy Irons. That is all.

Long in development, but on the eve of release (expected Fall 2007) fans of 80's pulp fantasy can also look forward to Margret Weis and Tracey Hickman's Dragonlance novels, which are getting the animated treatment with Jack Bauer and Xena providing key voices (IMDb link)

OMFG!!!

I have been waiting to see a post liek this for YEARS!!!!!!

This is fucking fantastic! Ive read every Terry Brooks book ever written, and you are absolutely right, with each movie comes a new generation, so you dont have to sign up actors for extended periods of time, withc the exception of a few Allanon, the River Master, and a few others, but the main characters are always different decendants.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS NEWS, just made my year!!!!

Also as a side note, this isn't the first Terry Brooks series to be optioned. Magic Kingdom For Sale, SOLD! was recently purchased by Stephen Sommers (I think, which ever guy did the Mummy movies) and I have been really disappointed with it because from what Ive heard they are making drastic changes from the books, but Terry seems to think they're not that bad, he's just happy its being made, as he has always wanted to have his books made into films.

Fuck Im jazzed about this!!!

Been looking forward to the animated chronicles too, Keifer Sutherland is voiceing Raistlin and word is he has been taking it really seriously, making sure he is saying the magic phrases and spels spot on, really happy to hear about that kind of dedication, because over all Chronicles is one of the best fantasy series EVER, and hopefully the animated films are just the beggining, because it really deserves a live action treatment as well, maybe the Shannara deal will set that in motion.

Happy times being a 30 something nerd.
