Yesterday I wrote a gushing post here, telling everyone of the marvels of the French Paprika DVD-releases because they supposedly had English subtitles.
Well, it seems I yelled too early.
Sorry guys, sources tell us that these DVD's will only have French subtitles. So if you pre-ordered these based on the appearance of English subs, my advise is to cancel those orders and wait until more becomes known. Again sorry, we had multiple confirmations but they might have been quoting the same incorrect source.
Now having said that, this doesn't mean there won't be English subs on them, just that some of the official press releases from Sony Columbia make no mention of them. And maybe they just don't want to advertise it. For the record, they do not mention Arab subtitles either, make of that what you want.
But for now, all I can say is that English subs can NOT be confirmed at this point so please be careful. And I will be more careful with posting news like this in the future, and just mention it in the forum instead of the main page...
This is what I commented in the other post:
CALAMITY. A source has confirmed that Columbia only provided French subtitles for these releases, making it very unlikely these versions will be in any way English-friendly.
I hereby swear I'll never post DVD-news again, I did it twice and was wrong twice. Even official sources like Sony-Columbia are just too damn unreliable when it comes to details like subs (remember when they mentioned the English version would have a Polish and Italian soundtrack?).
And now I'll start a videogame as I feel the urge to shoot something.
i don't think you can hold off on posting such things, it's the central nature of the interest - information is certainly our 'stock in trade' but it's also 99% certain errors are unavoidable because we're crossing the borders lots of people would prefer we didn't want to, but which we feel the need to. there's also an element of being so alone in finding stuff - we need more heads on these things, two being better than one at all times - when we could have potentially 10k people all wizzing around and playing their part... so, it's kind of something to dislike and avoid, something to be expected at the same time.
Too bad. Well, those things can happen, mistakes like this are unavoidable. I guess we need to be a little bit more patient. Luckily I already saw it on the big screen, but then again... that's why I know how good it is! Wouldn't mind seeing it again in full HD. Let's wish for an English subbed bluray to be released anytime soon. Hope to receive the Japanese LE box next week (if it won't get caught up at customs). If anybody's interested in seeing pics of the set, just let me know.
I hope you don't stop posting DVD news -- I for one am glad to learn that even a French-subtitled version will be available. As an aside, I did pick up the French R2 of Taxidermia, but my multi-region player wouldn't read the French subs, so I had to watch it with the French dub. Still, better than nothing!
Well, to be honest, after 'perusing the evidence' I'm still left with plenty of doubts, meaning there is some hope after all.
The main source on this said that the Sony-Columbia note which didn't mention English subs ALSO didn't mention several extra's which ARE considered confirmed. So maybe it was an old note? Maybe the French-Arab-English subtitle rumor was based on newer info and true after all?
To be honest I did pre-order yesterday, but will wait a week or two before deciding to cancel this order because I have a vague suspicion this news might yet again be reversed.
Only time will tell but like I said, lets discuss news on this in the forum and I'll refrain from posting on this until I'm absolutely bloody certain.
Jon Pais, that doesn't mean we'll stop posting DVD-news at all here at Twitch. God knows Twitch would be in bad shape if they had to rely on just me for DVD-news!
;-)
And Kajino P,
HELL YES would I be interested in seeing pictures of the set! I started a forum topic specially to show such pics, and the Paprika LE looks amazing.
I have also seen this film in the cinema (thanks International Film Festival Rotterdam, thanks Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival!) so my anticipation for an English-friendly version of the Japanese LE is very very high indeed!
No problem at all. In that case I'll get you some pictures and post them at the forum! ^_^
