EDIT: sorry guys, sources assure us that these DVD's will only have French subtitles. So if you pre-ordered these based on the appearance of English subs, my advise is to cancel those orders and wait until more becomes known. Again sorry, we had multiple confirmations but they all seem to have been quoting the same incorrect source.
Sorry if that title sounds somewhat overenthusiastic, but I'd lie if I said I'm not exited about this!!
Now I know we have wrongly posted before about a possible early DVD-release. Sony has been shuffling dates on this like you wouldn't believe, confusing people left and right. Including several distributors. And us.
But finally there is good news on the horizon for people who can't wait to have Satoshi Kon's "Paprika" on DVD.
This was a tip from Logboy (bless him), using the "Catsuka" forum (bless them!) which actually provided the news about the French R2 releases. Which contains the following information:
-all versions will be released on the 20th of June: normal, super and blu-ray.
-the super edition includes the 760 page book, same as the Japanese had.
-Amazon France has them ready for you to pre-order them.
And here it comes, wait for it:
-includes French, Arab and English subtitles for the normal and super editions (blu-ray has yet to be confirmed)
Add to that the commentary track from the director and composer, and a Japanese DTS soundtrack, and and and...
OK, done pre-ordering.
Here are some links:
You can read about these editions here at Catsuka (our source for this news) , here and here.
As mentioned you can pre-order several editions at Amazon France:
Normal
Super-box
Blu-ray (no English subs confirmed yet - we will keep you updated and are looking as we speak)
Why am I so happy? Well...

Just in time .Almost jumped on Japanise LE (without subs).
Now it would be interesting if Sony will relise Region 1 LE.
Would anyone know if the extras, esp. the book are in english or have eng. subs? That would make or break whether or not i get the super box. It's about 50 Euro, which comes to about $67. Pretty decent deal.
Sweet. I might get the Super edition and the Blue Ray, just in case the Blue Ray one doesn't have subs, but why shouldn't it?
Saw this film a few weeks back at the San Francisco International Film Festival and, while not a big anime fan, it completely blew my mind. Thanks for the post. Good news indeed for anyone with a region-free player.
Bummer: Just went to order the vanilla version on Amazon.fr and the shipping is almost as much as the item:
Articles : EUR 16,71
Livraison HT : EUR 10,90
Total HT : EUR 27,61
At the current exchange rate, that's roughly $35.
Bummer indeed. Try living in The Netherlands and finding Criterion DVD's for a decent price. Or anime wall scrolls, or T-shirts, when shipping sometimes actually exceeds the product cost with a factor of 2.
Shipping costs suck but they're a fact of life and I'm still glad we live in a BIG world.
If you just want the vanilla version you might want to wait a bit till the R1-US release or just postpone ordering a bit until more vendors start selling the French version.
The Amazons (French or otherwise) are robust and reliable but they're seldom the cheapest with new titles.
And if you're in the States, rejoice! You'll get a cinema release any day now,and you definitely should try to check thisout in a cinema!!!
Where'd you get the specs list? Amazon.fr shows no details on anything. Are there any further details on how much is subbed aside from the main feature?
Check the Catsuka link and the two next to it. No info yet for subs on the extra's, but we're trying to find out what's what and will keep this article updated (or post a new one!).
the fnac site says that there is only french subs on the blue-ray, but not much details :

I think that would be pretty weird if they wouldn't include english (and arab) subs though it's on the DVD release. btw they say the same thing for the DVD.
Great news! Thanks, Ardvark
thats the one apparent contradiction we're hoping to clear up, that the blu-ray seems to not include english subs at this point. however, if you go looking you can find some sites brave enough to mention it's actually the case :
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/f150214_paprika_blu-ray.html
there's a likelihood that the R1 will appear some short period after the limited cinema release (which is very soon - next week?) but i would base a more solid prediction of that on seeing an amazon listing appear, as they're usually the first to know and it's usually 3 months in advance that things are revealed.
Thanks for the update you guys. Already pre-ordered the Japanese limited edition, but I refuse to cancel it! I'm an impatient guy and the Japanese editions are to be released next week so... Also, is it just me or does the French super box look "less" impressive? Anyway, I'll add the French regular DVD or Bluray at a later time, depending on which one will have subs.
The only trouble I have with the French box is that, as mentioned in the Catsuka forum, they plastered the title right over Satoshi's specially made intricate box drawing.
Then again, the whole unblemished image might be found elsewhere, like on an inner sleeve or something.
But I tell you, if the news about the English-friendlyness proves to be false I'll be somewhat heartbroken.
Somewhat as I can decrypt French when necessary (takes me a lot of time though...).

Yes, but there is no audio stream :D
What I cant belive is that they dont include spanish subtitles, I mean, there are like 250 millions of spanish speakers.... and the problem is that I know a lot of people who will buy it if ti has those.... jeez!
Hi, I have never imported from Europe. But I am intereseted in importing this because I really enjoyed Paprika. This French release is sounding really sweet. So, I was just wondering, do French DVDs play on NTSC TVs? I have a region-free dvd player that can play R2 Japanese dvds because they also NTSC TVs. But do R2 English DVDs and/or French DVDs work TVs here in the States? I'm not sure with the PAL and SECAM stuff. Do I need a TV that can switch between them? Thanks.
CALAMITY. A source has confirmed that Columbia only provided French subtitles for these releases, making it very unlikely these versions will be in any way English-friendly.
I hereby swear I'll never post DVD-news again, I did it twice and was wrong twice. Even official sources like Sony-Columbia are just too damn unreliable when it comes to details like subs (remember when they mentioned the English version would have a Polish and Italian soundtrack?).
And now I'll start a videogame as I feel the urge to shoot something.
If your region-free player also handles PAL --> NTSC conversion, you're all set. Otherwise, if the disk is PAL and your TV isn't, you are out of luck.
But you can always buy a Pal-NTSC onverter which arent terribly expensive, not much more than 20 USD I would think.
But if your tv is less than 5 years old, chances are it will be able to do PAl (although you might have to search for the switch, either as a button or as a setting in the menu's).
animenewsnetwork.com on french paprika :
"Paprika French Blu-ray (10:33 PM EDT): The recent news of Paprika being solicited in France has been clarified by someone from Sony in regards to the Blu-ray release. Initial concerns over the discs technical specs being a port of the DVD specs has been cleared up and as it stands, the 06/20/2007 release will be all-region coded (A/B/C), it will be a dual-layed 50gb disc using MPEG-2. The Japanese audio track will be done in uncompressed form and if the French listing is to be trusted, it will have English language subtitles."
So slowly but surely were crawling back up to the point where I start to believe that English subs might be there after all..
I though France was SECAM, not PAL. But yes you need a Multi-format capable TV and a multi-region multi-system DVD player, TVs are cheap, I have a 29 inch one for less than 300 and a DVD for 60.
Ok, here's the link to Paprika DVD in France, as you can see it comes with Japanese and French audio and ONLY French subtitles.
