Oh no. Trailer for Jet Li and Jason Statham rental 'War'

(Posted In Action Asia Martial Arts Trailer Alert USA and Canada )

War-Jet-Li.jpgTodd dangled this carrot in front of a number of us yesterday. I guess I have to be the one to write about it. So clearly I am not the only one on staff who has watched this trailer and thought that western cinema took another gigantic leap backwards in the action genre. I'm just dumb enough to write about it.

Movies IGN: After his partner Tom Lone (Terry Chen) and family are apparently killed by the infamous and elusive assassin Rogue (Jet Li), FBI agent Jack Crawford (Jason Statham) becomes obsessed with revenge as his world unravels into a vortex of guilt and betrayal. Rogue eventually resurfaces to settle a score of his own, igniting a bloody crime war between Asian mob rivals Chang (John Lone) of the Triad's and Yakuza boss Shiro (Ryo Ishibashi). When Jack and Rogue finally come face to face, the ultimate truth of their pasts will be revealed.

I think I've already seen this film. What was it called? Cradle to the Grave? No, that wasn't it. Double Impact? Nope. Marked for Death? Nope. Romeo Must Die? No. Dang. What was it called?! Somebody help me here. There were two guys. And they killed all these other guys. And there was hip hop music. And fast cars. You know which one I am talking about...

Here comes the pain

The floor is open for discussion. Play nice.

How can you even go from Crank and Fearless to ponying up shite like this? And why is he always riding a mucsle car that's supposed to be the GT500 but never is?

» Posted by BtoFu at May 17, 2007 12:47 AM

There is also a NINJA in that trailer.

» Posted by Brian at May 17, 2007 12:53 AM

Jason Statham has an unbearable voice. Him and Michelle Rodriguez.
With that said, Jet Li is my boy for better or worse, so I probably will end up seeing this some day

» Posted by DMack at May 17, 2007 01:25 AM

not only a ninja, but there's also the stereotypical incredibly hot asian chick who is ridiculously good at every kind of Kung Fu and throwing knives....

Awful trailer, awful new title that reeks of whoever's ass it was pulled out of, awful music. Lionsgate reminds me more and more of the bad old Miramax every day. AWFUL trailer. Thing is, I saw a decent and unpretentious B action movie peeking out of that mess of a trailer. It isn't art, but it's not trying to be, either. Fast cars, ninjas, hot chicks with kung fu and throwing knives are things to complain about now? Sure, it's a bad trailer, but let's not take it out on poor, innocent ninjas.

That was Mark Cheng Ho Nam in there... What a waste of a debut.

» Posted by Momo at May 17, 2007 05:06 AM

Did someone just call Devon Aoki "incredibly hot"? It's alright, though. To each their own. And as far as disposable action trash is concerned this does indeed look like a passable rental. By the way, for those who are surprised Statham had a part in this, please let's not forget he is also in Uwe Boll's IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE. Just because no distributor has dared to unleash a 180 minute Boll Epic upon us doesn't mean it no longer exists.

This movie doesn't look like it will have an armored monkey (preferably a large chimpanzee) with a sword anywhere in it, so I will pass.

Brodie, dude, tell me that if you met a "stereotypical incredibly hot asian chick who is ridiculously good at every kind of Kung Fu and throwing knives" you wouldn't a) marry her and b) never let her leave your side because when the apocalypse comes, you will need her. Am I right?

I remember seeing this film when Antonio Bandaras and Lucy Liu played Jason Statham and Jet Li's parts... Ecks vs. Sever, anyone? :)

» Posted by Adam Bailey at May 17, 2007 09:10 AM

It looks good and gritty. I will for sure see it.

Not going to say much about War, since it looks so bland, but please don't put Double Impact and Marked for Death in the same category. T_T Those are two of my favorite movies in the early careers of JCVD and Seagal and neither one had a hip hop score.

"John Crow, we're goin' nyam your supper soon, boy"

» Posted by quartet4 at May 17, 2007 10:30 AM

HELL YEAH I'M GONNA SEE IT!!! HIP HOP RULES!!

OK, seriously, I think Hollywood screenplays are being written with the use of Mad Libs™ these days. Try filling in these blanks and then watch the trailer below and see how you did.

In a world where the [ASIAN CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION] and the [SECOND ASIAN CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION] are at odds with one another, a killer named Rogue [ASIAN MALE WHO IS RECOGNIZABLE TO AMERICANS BESIDES JACKIE CHAN] is about to kick off a war. When FBI Agent Jack Crawford [RIDICULOUSLY JACKED ACTION STAR WHO IS NOT VIN DIESEL] finds out that Rogue killed his partner, all hell is gonna break loose. Also, there is this super hot chick who throws scissors or something [ASIAN FEMALE WHO IS RECOGNIZABLE TO YOUNG AMERICAN MOVIEGOERS WHO IS NOT MICHELLE YEOH OR ZHANG ZIYI]. Then, some more hell breaks loose [SNIPPETS OF PRETTY MUCH EVERY SCENE IN THE MOVIE, EDITED TOGETHER AT A SEIZURE-INDUCING PACE]. Featuring new music from [OUTMODED RAP-METAL ACT FROM TWO YEARS AGO]. See it now!!!!

Ridiculous.

no wonder thai movies like tom yum goong, born to fight, and dynamite warrior are gaining popularity. Honestly, I think Jet Li is just doing it for the money. And if this could'nt get any worse, he's doing that movie with Jackie Chan! Every time two big stars get together, the movie is promoted like a mother......then fails to deliver. I'm gonna watch Ong-Bak now.

Well i never liked movies that Jet li did in the US or was meant to be an American Movie. But i know for sure that Jet Li's new movie, THE WARLORDS will be TOTALLY ASWESOMES!!! and will be way better then any movies he'll ever did!!!! too bad youtube took out the trailer, but for your information, Jet Li is getting old and still he could still kick ass....I know that Tony Jaa is new and good but his movies has no good storyline, whats good about his movies is his action. I think people are wasting alots of good martial art actors for doing dumb movies! If they could put them into a tight and well develope story with big action then all their movies will totally be the bomb and nothing will compare that.

You know maybe I am crazy...but I likes this trailer. I think that this will be a good movie and I am glad to see Jet and Jason in a movie together. With Corey Yuen doing the fight sequences, I have no doubt that this will be a good movie. You know sometimes we make movies more that what they are. I like good plot like anybody else, but sometimes I like to have some mindless action. As long as the fight scenes are good in this movie, it will be good. The Transporter plot was not great but the action in those movies were really good. Give the movie a chance and don't going there with high expectations. Just take the film for what it is worth. You may have a better time.

Hmm where to start.

First of all Do not put Dynamite Warrior in the same category as Tom Yum Goong and Born to Fight. Dynamite warrior is a fucking waste of a movie.

Secondly, maybe you guys shouldn't cover action movies if you are just going to shit on it for being an action movie. Bitching because it has Ninjas, Hot chicks, hot cars and shit blows up? I think some of you have misplaced your balls. This looks no where near the level of bad as Half Past Dead and all the other shitty comparisions.

Cliched? probably, but they weren't looking for an oscar nod here, they were looking to show some asses kicked and blow shit up....were ya'll looking to get weepy-eyed or learn a life lesson?

Nord

I think you misunderstand what we are saying Nord. On a personal note, I never said I liked Dynamite Warrior (it was a waste of film). I am just pointing out the fact that there are people that watch it because of the action sequences people haven't seen in a long time. I agree that they aren't trying to go for an Oscar, hell neither was Bullet proof monk but the movie still sucked, lacking in story AND action. When martial arts movies are produced state-side, they tend to suck.

» Posted by david at May 20, 2007 08:21 PM

anybody knows the music from the trailer?

» Posted by jojo at May 23, 2007 06:12 AM

David,
I do not agree with you about Jet Li just doing it for the money. I feel he is passionate about his work and he tries to fond good movies to work in. You have to understand not everyone set out to make a bad movie. Maybe the story sounded good on paper then as you are filming you realize that it sucks but by that time you are committed.
I also feel that everyone wants to see Jet Li in always period martial arts films and when they see him in a different role other than that, it sucks. I liked Kiss of the Dragon and The One because it was something different for Li and I thought he did a nice job.Romeo Must Die was just a vehicle to get his feet wet in the U.S. besides Lethal Weapon 4 (He was good, but movie sucked!).

But on thing I agree with most people on. I wish a person like the guys who did the matrix would work with him because they understand how to do movies with martial arts in them and can write a good script If he can get that I would love to see it. And don't judge the movie War & the Li/Chan project until you see more. I thought the new Bond was going to suck but it did not. Give these movies the benefit of the doubt.
The reason why a lot of American produced martial art films are not that good because Hollywood will not let a lot of these actors do their own stunts because of insurance reasons. If they would turn them loose and trail them right like they did in the Matrix, these films would be better.
