Masaru Konuma's 'Flower and Snake' (1974), R1 USA August 28th 2007.

masarukonuma.jpegBelated mention (revealed in listings in the past few days) for Masaru Konuma's first 'Hana to Hebi' (lit. 'Flower(s) and Snake(s)', from 1974) which is his popular Nikkatsu S&M-themed Roman Porno with the legend of the genre, Naomi Tani. Directed and released the same year as Konuma's 'Wife to be Sacrificed', within a year of troubled finances for Nikkatsu, and within troubled times themselves, 'Hana to Hebi' spawned a run of films appearing under this title (some of which had earlier Japan Shock DVD releases) over the decades, which continues into very recent times with Takashi Ishii's two entries from 2004 and 2005. Ishii is the writer behind earlier similar work found within Artsmagic's stunning 'Angel Guts' R1 USA DVD set, as well as the director of the incredibly popular 'Gonin' films.

As far as access to these films, as with many Pink / Roman Porno films (even those of critical note, of some regard) there's been relatively little, but nosing around provides a relative wealth hiding in other countries, at decent prices, even without the necessary aspects most require. Media Blasters continue a small run of interest from American Companies by providing this release, and it's another choice which seems to show insight in aspects of people's interest and discussion with regards other genre releases from other labels. They're also relatively out of the ordinary by comparison to much more obvious, contemporary affairs which lack the latent desire to be seen of older films languishing on shelves - yet if you hunt it down, there's a discussion and appetite for these and many other films outside of the circles regular DVD buyers frequent. There are some 30+ Masaru Konuma films on DVD release in Japan... twice as many entries for his work at JMDB.

This is seriously great news and it indicates that Takashi Ishii's more recent FLOWER AND SNAKE films have sold very well for Media Blasters. I'm very curious how fans of the two available films will react to Konuma's 1974 original since it is a very different film. Ishii's two films are serious, often disturbing sexual psychodramas. Konuma's film, on the other hand, is a wacky 70ies sex comedy.

something on the wiki page for 'flower and snake' says either oniruki or konuma were unhappy with nikkatsu's desire to get light-hearted with s&m (something shunned by them until this film) which it describes as making for (unintentional?) lightheartedness. still, good choice of film, more please.

Konuma did plenty of sex comedies so I think it's more likely that Oniroku Dan was a little put off by the first adaptation from his series of books. Knowing that licensing movies "in bulk" is often cheaper than going for just a single title, I think there's actually a pretty good chance that Media Blasters have also licensed the rest of the Nikkatsu FLOWER AND SNAKE movies. I'd have to check again but there are at least 4 more of them which were made in the 80ies and, from what I've heard, got progressively worse.

Come to think of it, Media Blasters are also releasing anime porn (hentai) through their Kitty Media sub-label. And there was a 3 episode FLOWER AND SNAKE anime series last year... Another possibility, I think. Not that I'm more than mildly curious about the anime version. From the trailers it looked as if they basically animated the first of the Takashi Ishii movies and somehow decided to make every character look to be in their early 20ies and pretty. That's not the point of these movies. It's supposed to be beautiful girls and really gross, old men!
