Koch Vision

Thinking back on the coming-of-age story I realized that I count several of them as favorites. So it‘s always a joy to recommend another. Tom Brown’s School Days surely stands out above the crowd with its dynamic young lead and besides who can resist the endearing Stephen Fry? Adapted from Thomas Hughes novel this follows Tom Brown a young boy struggling to come of age in Rugby Public School as he faces bullying, homesickness and having to stand up for his friends. Fry plays a new headmaster at the school trying to stamp out the abuse and drunkenness but who finds himself fighting the very administration he is supposed to control. As adaptations go this one is stellar even if it does take a lot of liberty with the source material. No extras.

And let's not forget that Tom Brown was bullied by the infamous Harry Paget Flashman, whose memoirs were edited by George MacDonald Fraser (the scrpit writer of the 1973 Three (and Four) Musketeers as well as Octopussy. Flashman was also brought to the big screen in 1975 in Richard Lester's Royal Flash.
