That's right, you better hang your head because the darkness has taken over your once great franchise. Come into my web said the Spiderman sequel to the dimwitted fan who happily forked over his lifesblood for a few paltry thrills and a less than grand denouement to one of the very greatest if not greatest superhero films series ever made. It breaks my heart to tell ya not to break a twenty trying to check out Sam Raimi's newest but I wouldn't even bother seeing this again in Imax. The following contains small spoilers mostly because I'm convinced I can't make this experience any worse for you.
At 2 hours 19 minutes Spiderman 3 plays like Bollywood without the musical numbers. Wait that is an insult to Bollywood. Sam Raimi has finally gone and done it. He’s a made a bad, almost boring movie. Entertaining in spots, occasionally funny only very occasionally thrilling, this overblown sequel manages to be less entertaining than X3 and even more predictable. That’s right haters. I said X3 was a better movie than Spiderman 3. It juggles more characters more effectively, has better effects in spots and is a heckuva lot more fun than this mess.
The main problems? Besides some surprisingly ineffective CGI the film, like many other superhero flicks, just has too many darn villains and feels suspiciously like Sam Raimi has grown bored with the franchise.
First let me tell you what I liked. The main cast are all very good in their roles. The first fight sequence between Harry and Peter is one of the very best in the whole series and a little bit of the Sandman stuff looks awesome-especially the dynamic giant sand monster sequence at the end. Also impressive is the black suit which seems very much alive if awfully choosy about when to latch on to its next victim. And Bruce Campbell has a cameo in this movie to die for playing a French headwaiter. Forget any other cameo the man has had this is hysterically funny, and a real gift to fans.
Now on to the hard part, I really don’t like to say it, but, this movie is simply forgettable.
How can a movie about a human spider not have a leg to stand on? This is a long drawn out melodramatic mess sprawling through situations that so broad as to be beyond emotional resonance. I never cared much whether Peter and MJ got together, stayed together or for that matter wound up in a kinky threesome with Harry. That would make almost as much sense as anything else that seems to motivate these characters.
I never cared much whether Peter and Harry resolved their conflicts and became friends. I almost cared if Sandman got to see his daughter again. I really, really didn’t care what happened to Venom. And MJ? This movie is simply gutless in giving us a Peter Parker MJ story arc that could have been lifted straight out of the OC, or As the World Turns. Characters die, turn bad, and turn good again, all at the drop of a hat and in the end bad writing just gets worse in an attempt to resolve the storylines. And there is one scene in this movie that actually made me want to contact Raimi to see what on earth he was thinking. It involves Harry’s butler- a character barely glimpsed in the film but who emerges at a key moment to give advice that a better written movie would have avoided altogether, an adequate film would have at least put those words in the mouth of someone we know and have invested in.
Which speaks to another issue. Why is Harry still in this series of movies? His story arc is impossibly over wrought and his amnesia in this film is the weakest possible filmmaking conceit. Goblin Jr.? Look either do another Goblin flick or don't Sam. This movie did not need the padding out.
Sandman? We’re given a great origin sequence, a reasonably compelling back story and a by the numbers fleshing out that despite Thomas Hayden Church’s earnest and skillful efforts feels too been there done that due mainly to the poor script. The final scene between Spidey and Sandman is well acted but ultimately fluff. Venom? He doesn’t appear until the last act and is treated rather unforgivably like a simple movie monster. His human counterpart Eddie Brock is drawn in the broadest possible terms and even though Topher Grace does what he can the role just isn’t substantive enough to come alive for anyone who’s a true fan of the comics.
Last but not least the CGI in this movie is too much too late in the franchise. We move from obviously cartooned images into live action in a jarring series of overlong uninspiring ineffective effects sequences.
If this movie commits one unpardonable sin it’s that it is forgettable- almost completely.
Am I saying don’t go see Spiderman 3? Only go on opening weekend if you’ve already seen Disturbia and Hot Fuzz. Otherwise you’ll be missing two fine films all in the hopes of getting your summer movie buzz on early.
Man that's harsh. My friend saw it the other day and he liked it, but then again he's in the business of selling toys from these films so I don't know if I completely trust him. But I will be seeing this when it's released over here in a few weeks.
I agree wholeheartedly with this review. Saw it last night and I can barely remember what happened in it. Personally, I didn't even like the first Harry/Peter fight. I found it very dark and difficult to guage what was going on. Who's flying where and what angle am I looking at the action at again?
I agree about the quality of the CGI, except maybe for the effects of the black oil symbiote when it's crawling around or attaching itself to someone.
Once my wife and I left the theater and started talking about it, we realized just how many aspects of the movie made us say, "Why did person A do that? Why didn't person B do this? What was the point of person C's role?" Just too many headscratching moments that made you say, "What were the filmmakers thinking?" I especially agree about the butler scene, but the scene with Peter taking the piece of the symbiote to Dr. Conner is also a kind of a headscratcher, too. Like it was just shoved into the movie for a, "I don't think the audience will understand what is going on, so we better just have a scientist explain it to them."
Personally, I didn't even feel that invested in the Sandman's character arc, though I probably felt the MOST invested in that one than any of the other characters.
Spiderman 3 is just a big, big mess overall. Soulless and overly calculated, a product of a marketing machine more than of a filmmaker who loves his subject.
This is what happens when the studio exec's get too involved trying to "give the fans what they want." Douchebags. I was soooo worried this is what would happen. If only they had stuck to Sam and Ivan's original script... I guess I need to go see Disturbia instead.
BTW Peter went to Doc Connors for help getting off the suit the first time (in the comics) as well as Mr. Fantastic if I recall correctly.
Thank god some reviewers are finally being honest as to what basically amounts to a sad start of the summer for me, and there are 4 more pt.3's this summer. What makes this all the more heartbreaking is that while X3 was trash from people who make trash (Ratner), this is from the people who made 2 great films before.
This is disappointing. I've also read similar lukewarm reviews elsewhere and there seems to be a general consensus. I knew there had to be another reason for Sony/Columbia's decision to release the film abroad first (aside from trying to get the U.S. film premier into Tribeca). It will probably still rake in a lot of business/money this weekend. This isn't looking good for the upcoming "Transformers" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" movies which may not be any better.
Great Review, Canfield!
I haven't seen it yet (plan to do so tomorrow), but now I know what exactly to expect out of it :)
I'm surprised you didn't mention Peter's EMO power when he went "Evil". That was the funniest thing, that entire scene was so ambarasing I could hardly stand to watch. Good thing laughing makes it hard to concentrate.
I'm really happy to know movie goers and critics alike can see how Spider-Man 3 falls way short of the previous installments. Movie Execs have to understand that the audience isn't going to enjoy a meal, just because it cost an arm and a leg to prepare. We just want a good well thought out movie.
I'm hoping word of mouth kills this movie at the box office in the coming weeks. We need to send a message. We are tired of execs ruining movies!!!
All I can say is that Spider Man 3 managed to destroy the great image of Spider Man. We need it be rescued as was done with Batman in "Batman Beginsthis movie" Tobey and Kirsten should have never been considered, they just suck in every possible way. Don't waste a dime on this movie. The makers of this movie should never be permitted to make any gains. Spiderman 3 is an insult to anyone's intelligence.
