The Films of Darryl Knickrehm

(Posted In Asia Film News Horror Trailer Alert USA and Canada )

dkpro.jpgAsk anyone who knows me: I get a lot of stuff in the mail. Some of it's bad. Some of it's HORRIBLE. But from time to time something drops in completely out of the blue to make me sit up and take notice. Such are the films of Darryl Knickrehm. A westerner living and working in Japan, Knickrehm aims to make films that blend the traditions of America and Japan - particularly in the horror sphere - and while the balance doesn't always completely work when he gets the blend right the results can be something pretty special. In Absentia - one of a trio of films I had the chance to watch today - in particular plays out like a blend of Shinya Tsukamoto, David Lynch and Christopher Nolan, a beautiful blend of raw experimentalism with a focused story telling ability that needs no dialogue whatsoever to present its story. Of his newer work the trailer for Rodosha looks to be the most self assured and polished work of his career to date. Go browse.
