Herman Yau's upcoming Hong Kong horror flick Gong Tau has received a Category III rating in Hong Kong, the harshest rating available for commercial theaters there. While there are occassionally films that perform well with this rating - Johnnie To's Election films, which share producer Dennis Law with this one, for instance - but the rating is generally a kiss of death when it comes to box office numbers. Anti-gang laws often lead to films getting hit with the rating thanks to prohibitions against depicting triad hand signs, tattoos, etc but Gong Tau got its Cat III the good old fashioned way: violence, horror and sex.
The film has also just updated its web site with a pair of new videos, a Making Of and an EPK.
Thanks to Mary for the news.
HELL YEAH! Herman Yau is a champ. It's been a while since someone has made one of these black magic movies where people puke up centipedes. Obviously I won't be able to support this in theaters but I'll order the DVD as soon as it becomes available.
Just saw Gong Tau last night. There's nothing original about the set up really - cop goes to Thailand, fools around with a girl, heads back to HK, girl is heartbroken, and puts a curse on him. The movie features quite alot of internal organs (esp. during an autopsy scene), loads of blood (both old school and computer graphics), plenty of centipedes, nudity including full frontal male genitals, and a totally ludicrous flying head vampire thingy. It's been a while since I seen something so hilariously fun.
On a side note, the film is receiving a rather limited release. Only very few cinemas are carrying the film, and yesterday, the 2 cinemas on Hong Kong island that did offer the film only had a showing each!!
