Bruno Dumont's Flandres - Bigger Trailer, R3 DVD available

(Posted In Continental Europe and Russia DVD News Drama Trailer Alert )

flandres.jpgFor fans of iconic popular music the question is often "The Stones or The Beatles?" For fans of high-minded aggressively confrontational art cinema perhaps the question is "Haneke or Dumont?" Where Cache got the royal treatment over here on North American soil (Canada & US anyway), Flandres is still lacking an American theatrical release despite the film winning the Grand Jury Prix at Cannes in 2006.

What brought this back to mind, apparently the Twitch crew (myself included) all missed it at TIFF, is a fine Greek Blog, Movies for the Masses is hosting the international trailer at the moment (The trailer can also be found in smaller form embedded in Windows Media and Quicktime on the films Official Site). Not really news here, but it is still a small tragedy that this film has not been released across the pond up until this point except at festivals. You Brits will get it in July 2007.

"Demester shares his time between his farm and walks with Barbe, his childhood friend. He loves her, secretly and painfully, accepting from her the little that she can give him. Along with others his age, Demester leaves to be a soldier in a war in a far off land. Barbarity, camaraderie and fear turn Demester into a warrior. As the seasons go by, Barbe, alone and wasting away, waits for the soldiers to return. Demester comes back from war and learn to become a man again."

The failure, some might say the cowardice, of distributors to promote this film in the U.S. is probably largely due to the unfavorable reviews it received from The New York Times critics when it screened at Cannes. It's part of the SFIFF50 lineup and I just saw it at a press screening the other day. I've done a critical overview for SF360 and will be writing a little bit about it for The Evening Class and, perhaps, here; though I'm embargoed by the distributor's hold review policy. I'm also aiming for an interview with Dumont so wish me luck on that.

Thanks for the ethaicd link
Just to make it more embarrassing, I got it wrong in the title only.

Mary - do you have a source on that?
