It's a good time to be a Gatchaman fan, apparently. Not only is Kevin Munroe directing a CG animated feature film based on the classic cartoon - reedited and packaged here in the west as Battle of the Planets and G-Force - for Imagi Studios in Hong Kong - the same folk behind the TMNT movie - but it has just been announced that Japan's Nikkatsu Studios are preparing a live action adaptation for release in 2008.
Details are sketchy but what there are are here.
They need to get Yoshitaka Amano back on board to design the costumes and maybe the sets as well. Oh, and maybe hire talented people to write, direct and act.
I have mixed feelings about this. While I'm hoping for the best I fear being disappointed again like I was with "Cutie Honey", "Devilman", "Tetsujin 28 Go" and "Casshern". Imagi/Kevin Munroe's CGI "Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets" project seems to be off to a good start with impressive concept designs but I wonder if the story will suffer like it did with "TMNT". I'm excited about the news of Miike Takashi directing a live action adaptation of the Tatsunoko comedy-anime "Yattaman". Now this may be something to look forward to. Too bad he couldn't do Gatchaman as well. I'd like to see maybe someone like Kitamura Ryuhei or Kaneko Shunsuke take on "Gatchaman".
If it's anything like SMAP's short film version of Gatchaman, then it should be good. Yes, I liked it.
And I'm excited for the CGI film, as I thoroughly enjoyed TMNT.
