Richard Stanley's Hardware finally on DVD later this year?

(Posted In Cult DVD News Horror Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

hardware.jpg Good news everyone! Looks like Richard Stanley’s much loved Sci-Fi horror is finally getting a proper DVD release later this year. This is one of my favorite post apocalyptic horror films ever made and I’ve been wanting this on a decent disc since the format was popularized. I’ve been holding on to a VHS copy of the film for years and last year I found a nice widescreen version of it the illegal way which has kept me going. Time to throw them in back in the closet if this goes through.

Like most us know the movie went through some changes with the Weinstein brothers who headed Miramax at the time but according to Richard Stanley himself the odds of getting a director’s cut are very high indeed.

Here’s what he had to say about the subject on his Myspace blog.
“Hardware's fortunes also seem set for an eleventh hour upturn. With the DVD rights now practically worthless as a result of the industry going slowly but steadily down the tubes Miramax ( or what remains of it) has finally agreed to come to the table. It's early days yet but just getting the various parties talking is akin to getting the Israelis and the Palestinians to sit down together.
There's unlikely to be any money in it but if I can crack this particular Rubik's cube we could see a director's cut scheduled for an autumn release. I'm hoping to drop the crappy ADR lines added for the initial cinema run ( mostly to soften the characters and make them seem more in control ) as well as reinstating a couple of teeny, weeny yet oddly telling things omitted at the time.”

Sounds very good indeed. So let’s keep our fingers crossed for this to happen.

Cool, as the current German version is quite good (compared to VHS) and uncut, but unfortunately cropped to 1.33:1

Wait a minute - isn't that the poster art of "Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhatten"?

If it gets a DVD release then the folks at Subversive Cinema should be the ones to bring it out. Their work with DUST DEVIL last year was unbelievable.

Yes I'm hoping them or Dark Sky might be the perfect company to do this.

If we get a special package like the Dust Devil one, that would be sweet. I was very impressed by the quality and value in that one (company?).

I doubt they could include the same amount of extras since DUST DEVIL already had Stanley's documentaries. Of course they could theoretically include all his music videos and short films but I'd think getting the rights to all of those would be even more complicated than wrestling HARDWARE away from Miramax.

True. But I would like to see some behind the scenes stuff, a retrospective featurette maybe with the cast and crew, I know Tim Maurice Jones, Guy Richie's cinematographer worked on it and of course with Dylan McDermott being the star he is, he should attract the female crowd.

I'm just happy that the movie will be available (if all goes well), and it'll be (more or less) what the director originally intended. All I see are people carping about extras. I wanna see the movie, the extras are...extra. It's the movie that matters (especially if it's Stanley's original cut); the extras I can live without.

I already own a shitty DVD of the film as well as Japanese widescreen VHS so if they're going to release it again it might as well be a definitive edition. Though I would buy a bare bones DVD as well if it's indeed Stanley's director's cut.
