Just saw the terrible news over at AICN. Cult director Bob Clark, creator of such gems as Children shouldn’t play with dead things, Death dream, Black Sunday, Porky’s and my personal favorite Christmas Story and Murder by Decree, was killed today along with his 22 year old son in a car accident by a drunken driver.
This is really sad news indeed. His films have been with almost all of us through our childhood and teens and even though his career went south with the horrendous Baby Geniuses and Karate Dog he will always be remembered as the creator of those fantastic movies we love so much.
Rest in peace.
LA Times story.
Bob Clark's IMDB profile.
watched Deathdream last night in honor of him. always surprises me how effective his horror was, because there's so much compassion for suffering, feelings, the way life blindsides ordinary people, & their strength to carry on. RIP.
I was kind of hoping He'd get back into doing horror films after finally watching the original Black Christmas in January and trying to picture it being from the same director of Baby Genuises and the Porkys movies. This is really sad news especially to hear that it was due to a drunk driver.
Wow. Just sad, sad news. I hope there's justice for Clark's family. He may not have produced anything approaching his earlier works over the last few years, but who knows what else Clark might've had cooking. He will definitely be missed.
Clinton, he was about to get back into making horror films. He was in pre-production of his own remake of CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS and would have started filming this summer or fall.
Thanks for getting this up Swarez. This is a profound tragedy for every single horror fan. Words fail. I didn't appreciate the influence Porky's had on me and who could appreciate Karate Dogs but Bob Clark took risks his whole career didn't he? That's what I love about his body of work. The diversity, the heart (even in Porky's there was plenty of heart)- telling stories was what Bob did best. His horror films? Bob elevated one of the most maligned genres to a place few directors do. Deathdream and Black Christmas speak better than any fan or critic could about what we've lost.
If yer a prayer then pry for Clarks family and all affected by this tragedy.
I'm going to keep my leg lamp on all day.
Strange, as I just purchased and watched his Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the Ripper film, MURDER BY DECREE, a few nights ago. My sympathies for his family...
I don't mean to be mean, but come on. This is like the third article I've seen without any handle on capitalization. Maybe this article about a guy's death isn't the best place to complain but doesn't anyone proofread anything?
Word doesn't handle capitalization, only spelling.
Well, the movie titles are decapitalized. It should be easy to fix.
the senselessness of this thing is simply staggering, alliteration notwithstanding. i suppose, when a creative individual who has had a pronounced effect on an entire generation (and more) meets his end in such a manner, the significance is necessarily greater for many than it might otherwise be. but, to be erased by an illegal who was three times beyond the legal intoxication limit, and who will traipse out of the hospital in short order, is absolutely criminal, in every sense of the word.
if there's any justice in this modern world, sometime in the (hopefully, not too distant) future, this pathetic soul will be the recipient of some horrific plague which will last for decades and leave him a destitute and broken man.
and, yo, tyler f., let's not lose sight of the reason we're all here and posting. i seriously doubt that bob gives an effin' damn that his movie titles aren't capitalized. and i'm sure that if this was the most serious of the indignities visited on him this day, he'd be a very happy man, indeed.
so, to paraphrase durante, "good night mr. clark, wherever you may be".
