At the number one spot over the weekend was Jang Gyoo-seong's (My Teacher, Mr. Kim, 2003) dramatic comedy Small Town Rivals, pairing up actors Cha Seung-won and Yoo Hae-jin as two old classmates who haven't seen one another for 20 years. The one, a farmer and lowly town leader (Cha), must turn to his friend, a newly-elected magistrate (Yoo, the talkative gambler in War of Flower), to repair a road and other expenses, which he is denied. Meanwhile, the up-and-coming politician wants to build a nuclear waste facility in his county, which his friend bitterly opposes, pitting the two against one another. Critical reception of the film was lukewarm. Zack Snyder's 300 continues its dominance at the box office, recording 2.5 million admissions and running neck and neck with Small Town Rivals. Paul Verhoeven's WWII thriller Black Book drew slightly over 80 thousand viewers, placing it at number six, while ethnic Korean director Yoichi Sai's violent revenge film Soo, which opened on 244 screens and sold a mere 194 thousand tickets, fell to 188 screens in its second week to land at number 9. Han Jae-rim's gangster movie The Show Must Go On, starring Song Kang-ho, opens tomorrow in local theatres.
