Goro Miyazaki's 'Tales from Earthsea' R2 J DVD with Subs July 4th 2007.

gedowarhistory.jpegTwo different editions this time around, the standard edition (the one I will get this time, Product Code is VWDZ-8104, cover is as the original poster to the left) has both Japanese and English Subtitles (on Japanese 2.0 and EX sound tracks), as well as an English Dub (jn 2.0 only) on it.

The other (more expensive, Product Code is VWDZ-8106 and gets a slightly different cover) edition gets more language options - Japanese (in ES and 2.0), English, French, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese (all in 2.0 only) for those interested - plus an additional DVD of extras. None of those are expected, as usual, to be subtitled though.

Kind of reluctant to say it, but this one's is perhaps an ideal example of the Standard Edition being all that's required because the film's not had the best of reviews (that's fair to say) and may outside Japan will just want to avoid the daft lengthy wait due to the USA licensing situation on this one.

YesAsia have the multilingual edition as containing both Dubs and Subs in the laguages previously mentioned : English, French, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese; only a dub for Japanese. They also have the cheaper of the DVDs as having both English and Japanese Dubs and Subs.

I can't find any mention of English subtitles for the more expensive edition either. However, I believe your description of the language options for the expensive edition is incorrect. The multitude of languages referred to are actually soundtracks, not subtitles.

The expensive edition features two copies of the film - on disc one a copy of the film with Japanese DD 2.0 and DTS-ES soundtracks, and on disc two a copy of the film with five different language versions in DD 2.0. They did the same back when they released Mononoke Hime on dvd in Japan.

Also, the set appears to include two bonus discs, not one.

i saw this movie in tokyo last year and i have to say that it's the worst ghibli movie i've ever seen. of course, i could barely follow the dialogue since my japanese is far from great, but all my japanese friends were equally confused. not to say you shouldn't watch it (i probably will when the dvd's released in english), but as a fan of the source material i was more than a little disappointed at the adaptation.
