DVD News: Darren Aronofsky's 'The Fountain' R1 cover and specs

(Posted In Action DVD News Drama Sci-Fi / Fantasy Toronto Film Festival 2006 UK / Ireland / Australia / New Zealand USA and Canada )

The-Fountain-DVD-Cover.jpgBack in September during TIFF as we darted from theatre to theatre you couldn’t help but hear that every one of us who saw Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain loved it! Unfortunately, Todd was spot on when he prophesized it was doomed to failure in the box office, earning not even half of its budget back word wide [ouch!]. So why give it a moments notice when the DVD release was announced? Box office or not, it is still a very good film. Perhaps it will find success in the home theatre market. The release date is set for May 15.

English and French DD5.1 Surround
English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles

That cover is better than that other atrocious one I've seen floating around online, but it's still pretty ugly. A lot of ugly R1 covers going around lately - The Prestige, Children of Men, etc.

That is definitely the official R1 cover with the Australian poster art? The original R1 cover that popped up was appauling. Maybe the distros listened to the outcrys for once.

I won't buy this film on DVD until they release the inevitable special edition with the original poster art in 2 or 3 years. Sure, this version has some featurettes but considering how long Aronofsky worked on it there are bound to be truckloads of potential bonus materials available and Warners were just too cheap to spend the time and money on a proper DVD release just yet when the film has only been losing them money so far. They'll most likely be happy to do the old double dip after it has earned a profit on DVD.

Yeah, the cover art's not perfect but it's a lot better than what was originally floating around.

This is one film (like PL) that I won't mind too much if/when I need to double dip (I just want to see it again) -- but I am interested in what if any SEs or fancy versions are coming out in other regions -- haven't seen anything yet -- I guess it didn't do too well internationally either.

"Will the DVD be uncut?" is the real question. FOUNTAIN made a sudden jump from R to PG-13 right before the release, well after preview screenings had begun. Don't know if it was overturned on appeal or if footage was simply taken out. I'm definitely waiting to see how the different releases of this title stack up before purchasing.

It was overturned on appeal. Nothing was cut for the PG-13.

I saw this at the cinema and thought it was a profoundly moving and wholly original film. I sincerely hope this film when it hits dvd TO RAISE ENOUGH MONEY TO AT LEAST BREAK EVEN. i IMPLORE EVERYONE WHO LIKED REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, WHICH ITSELF WAS A MASTERPIECE TO BUY THIS WHEN IT'S OUT AND I DO HOPE THERE'S ANOTHER VERSION OUT THERE AS IT WAS VERY SHORT! ONLY 90 MINS LONG!
