The Host has passed the US $1 million barrier in the United States just three weeks after its release, according to it producer Chungeorahm. Released in 71 theatres on March 7, the film took in $320,000 the first week, rising to $690,000 the second week and $1 million in the third week, when the number of theatres increased to 94. And the film reached that figure faster than any previous Korean film released in the States. We reported on March 15 that The Host had earned US $671, 574 in China in its first week and with no other rivals in the near future, was expected to continue do well. These box office results contrast markedly with poor showings in Japan, where it only returned half its investment; in France, where the film sold fewer than 135,000 tickets; and in the UK, where it earned just US $.25 million in one month's time. We'll keep you updated on the Hollywood remake...

Jon, can fans of "The Host" ever really get tired of reading of its 'financial' progress, especially here in the states?
In honor of it's financial and yes, critical success one might wish to go to YouTube once again to view a clip posted by an Australian fan (TVBODAGA) which includes a nice subtitled commentary by director Bong Joon-Ho as well.

So... in the US would THE HOST be considered to be performing to expectations for its release here? Below them? Above them? Being the fastest Korean movie to the $1 million mark in America is A Good Thing, I guess... but how many other Korean movies EVER made it to the million-dollar level in US theaters? TAEGUKGI and... are we counting the Sun Myung Moon mega-flop INCHON here? Because I'm pretty much drawing a blank otherwise.
i hope they make it a wider release. the screen average for the first week sales was pretty damn good.
Am I the only one who sees this as a bad thing? Chungmuro is already bending over backwards to try and find movies that are easier to sell remake rights to (as well as fight for screen time with due to the lessened quota) instead of making uniquely good films. This will only encourage them to continue on the current path.
I mean, I'm glad Bong is finding American fans (and The Host is pretty damn good), but I don't like where this trend has being leading Chungmuro at all.
Douglas Roy -- Yes, even I get tired of reading about "The Host" -- nonetheless, a Korean film attracting as many American viewers as has Bong Joon-ho's is a newsworthy event.
Rhythm-X -- Some of the Korean films released here include “Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter,” “Brotherhood of War” [Tae Guk Gi] and “Old Boy.” "SSA&W" set the record with $2.3 M in 7 months. So yeah, I'd say "The Host" has exceeded expectations...
Robix -- I would have preferred to read that "Family Ties", "Like A Virgin" or "My Scary Girl" (to name just a few of last year's finest films) were getting nationwide distribution and accolades, but that ain't about to happen. And quite frankly, I could see any one of these easily being remade "for a global audience" (read: English-speaking), so I don't really see that as an issue.
Tampasolar -- You can bet "The Host" will get an extended release (meaning more venues).
