UK revives "The Transformers"

(Posted In Cult Film News UK / Ireland / Australia / New Zealand )

transformers_the_movie.jpgOnly to prove that I should be in the UK instead of the US, U.K. indie Metrodome Distribution announced that they're planning to re-release the 1986 classic "Transformers: the movie," which was a much more adult counterpart to what we're given in modern times.

Hoping to garner interest from "Transformers" fanboys, as well as catching new audiences, The distribution banner said it plans to open the film for an exclusive two-week theatrical run in one theater in London's West End beginning May 4. This release of which is celebrating the upcoming Michael Bay big budget live action adaptation.

The film, starring Judd Nelson, and Orson Welles is one of the first incarnations of the Transformers franchise with a much more mature atmosphere surrounding it. The US recently experienced a special edition DVD release of the film, and Metrodome is topping themselves off yet again.

Metrodome also said it hopes that the theatrical run will help publicize the release of the double-disc DVD of "Transformers: The Movie -- Ultimate Edition," which hits shelves June 4. Transformers was once the highest rated animated series in the UK, and they hope to reclaim its former glory in lieu of the theatrical release on July 4th.

I'm actually surprised at this move since, as a thorough 10 or 11 year old Transformer collector back in 1986, this movie was the single deciding factor that, at least in our neck of the woods, absolutely killed the franchise.
