After a rocky start, Im Kwon-taek's 100th film, "Beyond the Years" [천년학] (Korean title "Thousand Year Crane"), will at last arrive in Korean theatres on April 12th. "Beyond the Years" tells the story of an ill-fated pansori singer who adopts a boy and a girl, in hopes of fulfilling a lifelong dream to perfect the traditional musical art. Cho Jae-hyun ("Bad Guy") and Oh Jung-hae ("Seopyeonje") play the title roles. Troubles surfaced early in pre-production when Taeheung Pictures, which had a long working relationship with Im, dropped out of the project. Production house Kino 2 stepped in, changes were made in the casting, and shooting was set to begin. On March 30th, a preview of the film will take place at the Cultural Center of Jangheung, attended by the director, the author of the novel which inspired the film, the producer and the main actors. Jangheung, a small city in Jeolla province situated in the south-western part of the country, is the birthplace of writer Lee Cheong-joon, who wrote the novel "The Wanderer of Seonhak-dong," upon which the film is based. French distributor Wild Bunch picked up international rights for the movie at PIFF last October and the film is expected to screen at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
