A graphic designer friend of mine has been salivating for months at the prospect of this documentary on the typeface of Helvetica. The enthusiasm for this film has grown on me with the clips available on the films website.
In the words of the filmmakers:
"...as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type. Helvetica encompasses the worlds of design, advertising, psychology, and communication, and invites us to take a second look at the thousands of words we see every day."
It premiered at the SXSW festival where over 150 folks were turned away at the door as the screening hit capacity (when presumably, the graphics arts industry turned out en masse). With the Hot Docs Lineup announced earlier, there are two screening for the film coming up fast in April. It is certainly near the top of my Hot Docs screening picks.
