Update on Paco Cabezas' THE APPEARED (APARECIDOS)

(Posted In Continental Europe and Russia Film News Horror Mexico and South America Trailer Alert )

the_appeared_still01.jpgA page for Paco Cabezas' Spanish-Argentine-Swedish horror movie The Appeared (Aparecidos) has been added to GOMORRAHY.com; on that page are a stills gallery and downloadable teaser trailer for the movie.

As was previously reported here on Twitch, the screenplay for The Appeared was written by Cabezas. The movie stars Ruth Díaz as Malena, and Javier Pereira as Pablo.

Here's a synopsis for The Appeared from the production: "A road movie of terror. A trip to the dark side of the human soul. One night Malena and Pablo, a sister and brother travelling together in Argentina, discover a diary that details crimes committed twenty years ago. That same night, the past and present intertwine; before the siblings' helpless eyes, a family is persecuted, tortured, and murdered step-by-step in the manner described in the diary. The siblings' trip becomes a nightmare, in which they don't know if the people whom they're trying to save are real... or manifestations of something that occurred twenty years ago. Following the trail of 'the disappeared', they discover that, beyond the fiction, the true horror is hidden in the reality: 30 000 people were kidnapped, tortured, and murdered under Argentina's military dictatorship. The people forget, but the pain, as a physical presence, lives on."

Those who are interested in The Appeared may also wish to check out the pages on GOMORRAHY.com for Xavier Gens' Frontier(s) (Frontières), Gabriele Albanesi's The Last House in the Woods (Il bosco fuori), Daniel de la Vega's Death Knows Your Name, and Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage (El orfanato).

I like the hinting at a greater political subtext in the summary. If they pull that off this could be more than just another formulaic genre flick. Argentina is a pretty interesting country and has produced some unusual films lately. Gustavo Mosquera's MOEBIUS (1996) is a favorite of mine and a film that is in desperate need of an English friendly DVD release. AFAIK the Italian DVD is the only home video release that exists, quite good too, in terms of picture quality, but obviously lacking English subtitles.
