It has been a little while since anyone has gotten their Wong Kar-Wai fix outside of a few expensive DVD releases. And more than a few folks were disappointed with the stylish 2046. The man has been busy wrapping up My Blueberry Nights (previous Twitch Article) for a May/June release as well as pre-production on the slowly moving The Lady From Shanghai (which may or may not have Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in it) and a complete overhaul on Ashes of time (previous Twitch Article). Variety announced a project that will fit in between Nights and Lady and allow him to switch back to a Chinese cast (to cleanse the palette) before delving back into English speaking actors. The new film, as yet untitled, is about two lesbian lovers in high-school (yep, that's all we have at the moment) and will be produced by Stanley Kwan (He of the lush, but dismissed "Everlasting Regret" (see Mack's TIFF Capsule Review)). Total speculation, but do I detect a strong chance of Tony Leung Chiu-Wai as a teacher in this film? Shooting is set to start in April (!)

I'm in for anything Wai; English or otherwise.
I'm in for anything lesbian, Wong Kar-Wai or otherwise.
Wong Kar Wai and Stanley Kwan bring us lesbian schoolgirls, Palm Pictures releases a sociopolitical Japanese hardcore porn movie to US theaters, and the Weinstein Company unleashes the borderline-unwatchable, stare-into-the-strobelight arthouse madness of Eric Kot's DRAGON HEAT through "the world's greatest martial arts collection" Dragon Dynasty in the fall. Strange things are afoot on planet Earth these days.
Just to head off any confusion (since I've already seen some on other sites), Wong isn't directing this -- Wang Yen-ni (who won a Golden Horse Award for his previous shot film) is. Wong is presumably producing, although the Variety article says his exact role is still unannounced.
And in the interest of disclosing my own confusion (and latent sexism), that should be "her previous short film."
Thanks Bob.
The Variety article was vague at best, but anything with wkw's fingerprints on it is a good thing.
drewbacca: wong is his surname
