What do you do when your first short film gathers up awards by the fistful at festivals worldwide? If you're Phil Mucci you do something as different as humanly possible for your sophomore effort, that's what. Mucci's The Listening Dead was a carefully crafted black and white silent that fused elements of German expressionism with the classic Universal monster feel augmented with touches of stop motion and line drawn animation. That film is still in high demand on the festival circuit but Mucci is moving along, having already wrapped his sophomore short, Far Out.
What's he done this time? A full on 70's influenced grindhouse flick. The meticulous advance prep of The Listening Dead has been abandoned for a more seat-of-your pants, one take and out approach - script written in a week and a half, another ten days for pre-production, set built in two days, two days for shooting with the set torn down the next day meaning no possibility of reshoots. It's a dramatic change from the working style of his debut and though there is not yet a trailer for the film Mucci has passed along a trio of stills. Yeah, as good as he is at the formal stuff, he's just as good at this.
