Danish director Lone Scherfig has been surprisingly neglected outside of her homeland. Her Dogme film Italian For Beginners was one of the best of the movement but came late enough in the game that many people's attention had moved elsewhere by that point but while I can at least understand the mechanics of that one being overlooked the shrug that met her English language black comedy Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself - one of the finest efforts to come from the pen of Anders Thomas Jensen - is just plain baffling. Not so long ago Scherfig was attached to direct Erik Nietszche - The Early Years, a film scripted by Lars von Trier based on his time in film school but she tossed that project aside (it's still in production with a different director) in favor of this film, Hjemve. Here's the synopsis given at the DFI website:
Lone Scherfig has directed an original Danish comedy about people in a small town who slowly but surely no longer trust each other. They even get frightened by a naked man who has been seen one early morning walking through town. Luckily a small group of people are determined to find the naked man and help the town back to normal. They will soon find out that not only are they helping each other – they are also helping themselves. A film about trust, love and community.
The trailer is online, looking very good, and it appears that the nudity is contagious ...
