Posters and screening feedback from Boyle's 'Sunshine'

(Posted In Action Drama Random Geek Talk Reviews Sci-Fi / Fantasy Thriller )

Sunshine-Walk.jpgWe seem to be mighty reluctant around these parts to post anything about Danny Boyle's sci-fi thriller 'Sunshine'. Perhaps we're a superstitious bunch and we don't want to jinx it. Perhaps in each of us there is an internal struggle to really like Boyle and publicly admit it, but he is seemingly a director that splits his audience and we would rather not incur the wrath of those who sit on the dark side of opinion.

Regardless, this last week reports started surfacing about preview screenings on the other side of the pond. Over on Richard's site he picked up on a report from Solace in Cinema that was pretty much a glowing report of the film. Here's what Richard highlighted from it [because I am too lazy to pick out all the good bits myself]...

...the film looks beautiful...there was more than a couple of moments that visually took my breath away and had me literally in awe of what I was seeing...a second and third act that had me on the edge of my seat right up until the end. I think the last film I was this tense in was ‘The Descent’ and that was almost too much to bear, and I loved it.

However, as does seem to be the case with all Boyle films, the audience was split and the folks over at Film ick spoke with folks who weren't as impressed...

Well, most of the crowd liked it, it seems. Not everybody though. Nobody would even go on the record with me, but let me tell you: they made it obvious that this film can be quite easily rubbished if you want to rip it down...Negative terms I could coax out of the lucky few? Portentous. Indulgent. Smug. Silly.

But that is to be expected isn't it? Movies don't please everyone and opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone has one. Sunshine will open in a couple weeks over in the UK and we'll have our R2 DVDs well before the December release date here in North America.

By the way. Have you seen the posters for it? I found these three over at EmpireOnline. I like the two with Cillian Murphy, though they are essentially the same one. I don't like the other one though. It's too Hollow-wood. It is too obligatory. It looks like that Stealth poster and anything that reminds of Rob Cohen must die! What do you think?

I an a huge Boyle fan, Mack, so I'll probably go and see it. But the posters aren't cutting it for me. He normally has some pretty cool design going on (28 Days Later, Trainspotting). But the group shot looks like a rip-off of Armageddon, and the others like The Fountain. Neither get my juices up... hopefully there'll be something slicker for the North American release (which I hear isn't going to be until the Fall).

I think you mean Boyle not Doyle.

North American release is mid-December!!! DECEMBER!!!

poor.

Boyle? Really?!? Did I write an entire article typing Doyle instead of Boyle? That's embarassing. Looks like someone else went through and made the corrections. Doyle!!??!! What was I drinking last night?

I read that it might come out on September 14th in the US. I'm still looking forward to watching this movie. It looks like it has some beautiful shots and I think we're due for a move that will show how deadly and inhospitable space is again.
