Okay, this one takes a bit of explaining ...
Though Funky Forest and Taste of Tea director Katsuhito Ishii is best known for his live action work these days the man got his start as an animator and he continues to work steadily in the animation world even while busy in the live action sphere. Part of what makes Ishii so unique is the way he allows his anime sensibilities to creep into his live action work and now he's letting the same thing happen in reverse. How so? Well ... those who have seen Funky Forst - my review here - are already familiar with The Mole Brothers, the quick talking stand up comedy act who appear at the beginning of the film and scattered throughout. Well, Ishii became so enamored of the characters that he set out to create an animated backstory for them, that became a seven episode series of shorts and now they are appearing on DVD, with English subtitles included. Nice. No listing on YesAsia yet, but the disc is available for pre-order through CD Japan.
