Shin Sung-il is Missing [신성일의 행방불명], the independently produced debut feature film by Jane Shin Jae-In [신재인] , is now available for preorder. Released in Korea on February 16, the drama, shot on digital video, tells the moving story of children in an orphanage where an appetite for food is considered sinful. Displaying an abundant use of symbolism and metaphor, at times veering toward the surreal, with sequences that at times threaten to destroy coherence, Shin Jae-in's debut feature film has been called "one of the strangest Korean independent films ever seen." Hailed as brilliant by some, the 36-year-old Shin is that rare breed in an industry dominated by men -- a female director who first studied law, then went on to write novels before embarking on a career in filmmaking. The director's short films, made soon after graduating from the Korean Film Academy, Talented Boy Lee Jun Seop and His Truth Marches On both received critical acclaim. Her first feature film, shot on a derisory budget of 65 million won (US $69,333), was one of ten works selected by the Korean Film Council to be released on DVD as part of the 2006 DVD Production/Distribution Support for Independent Films. Shin Sung-il is Missing was first screened at the Pusan International Film Festival and won the Berliner Zeitung Readers’ Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival. Shin Jae-in's next film is about zombies who eat human flesh.
