Now how's that for value for money? Variety is reporting that John Woo's upcoming epic The Battle of Red Cliff, after seeing it's budget grow from $50 million to $75 million, has now been split into two films.
Now, the cynic in me says that this is largely a money move - charging at the gate twice makes it a lot easier to turn a profit, after all - but Woo and producer Terence Change are saying all the right things about motivation, rightly pointing out that this is a famous and famously complex story and they need the extra space in order to do justice to both the action sequences and character development. In other words they don't want to make the same mistake Tsui Hark did with Seven Swords.
Read the Variety article here.
According to the article the "non-Asian" version will be condensed into one film and missing 90 minutes of footage. No need to even guess which one we end up getting over here... emphasis on "one". So it is not entirely unlike SEVEN SWORDS... unless you're in Asia.
But at least we'll have a chance to see. I'm still waiting for the Seven Swords Director's Cut that's never gonna be.
John Woo hasn't made a descent movie since M1-2. What kind of crap was Paycheck and Windtalkers? He needs to go back to what he does best, gangsters killing each other!!! Bring back the slo-mo bullet fights and flyin seagulls dammnit!
Woo hasn't made a decent movie in the states since Face Off I think. MI-2 was terrible and I couldn't get through Paycheck. Didn't see Windtalkers.
John Woo has not made a good movie since I seen in a long long time. I even thought he ruined MI:2. So do I think he can do a epic story from the romance of the three kingdoms and make fans of the book like it.... Heck no.
