Satoshi Kon's 'Paprika' May Appear May 28th 2007 on R2 UK DVD.

paprika.jpgThis would be nice, and it's a great little find by Aardvark that he has emailed to me, so I can't take credit for spotting the one true gem amongst all the dross in the UK listings for anime DVD releases... it's either early March (according to play.com) or late May, according to Sony's own site...

Satoshi Kon's 'Paprika' is a prime example of something Japan suddenly had a mini goldrush on last year, decent feature-length animation that's not too engrossed in being typically anime by any means (and even Ghibli's reputation for high-end classics is left temporarily in tatters from the critical bashing 'Tales from Earthsea' has had), and the man himself is going from strength to strength with his incredibly solid exploration of human emotions inside the body of work he has built a huge reputation for over years, and he's perhaps the best exponent of animated features that truly require the medium to express the messages he tells of in his stories.

I have been waiting for this one, so I hope the date of release sticks - the film's with Sony for a USA Cinema Release, and yes, although I would far prefer to see this in even a smallish cinema I will settle for any method with turns up first even though I would love all things to turn up in the best possible fashion it's logistically not going to happen with a taste for foreign films, and I will settle for the choices DVD offers over much of what's available on screens anyway or anyhow. For now, this is a promising possibility, so keep those fingers crossed and stay tuned...

How about including some info about the label that will release this or maybe a link to the original news source?

Caterpillar,

www.play.com shows it as a fifth of March release, while www.Sonypictures.co.uk has it in their May release lists.

Let's pray that the missing Japanese dub is just a mistake...

Holy shit, you're right! Well, considering this UK DVD would be out before a Japanese disc release and how paranoid the Japanese are about back importing of cheap foreign DVDs I wouldn't be surprised if they insisted on a release that has no Japanese language track and will therefore not appeal to Japanese costumers.

Curious to see when it’ll be released. March or May? Does it matter? Well, not really as I’ll be buying it for sure. I immensely enjoyed it on the big screen during the IFFR 2007 and I don’t need to tell you why, Todd’s review says it all. Satoshi Kon is one of the anime directors who makes animation pieces of such a high quality that they’re even accessible to those who don’t like anime.

Anyway, I think I’ll be passing the English release as chances are high the Japanese will come with something good this movie really deserves. The Japanese DVD release has already been announced as well, but no info yet on the price, contents or release date:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%83%91%E3%83%97%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AB-%E5%8E%9F%E4%BD%9C-%E7%AD%92%E4%BA%95%E5%BA%B7%E9%9A%86/dp/B000KIX9CI/sr=1-3/qid=1171046996/ref=sr_1_3/503-4896212-0901518?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

Still, Kon’s last two films Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers were both released in Japan as limited edition box sets with English subs included as well. Let’s hope the same will be the case for Paprika. Of course it’s all about the movie, but IMO this movie deserves something better then only a regular 1-disc DVD release. For those curious how the former box sets look like, check:

All that’s left is a little bit more waiting and if you can’t wait, perhaps this will help as a temporary solution to get rid of your impatience:

Oh, I'll definitely wait until after it's been released in Japan, the UK and the US and then I'll pick the one that's most relevant to my interests.

Strange that Sony should leave out the Japanese audio. They released Tokyo Godfathers with the original audio on it.

Sony sometimes releases movies with DTS and D5.1 for English and only D5.1 for Japanese, but I've never heard of them skipping the Japanese soundtrack altogether.

My guess would be this is a typo and will be remedied before May.
